Replaced Engine - Keep or Sell?

I have a 2014 HSE, the crank failed around 3 months ago and it is finally being replaced at cost to garage / warranty. A reconditioned engine is going in (not new). The car has done 75K, it appears to only have one LandRover service stamp from 2015 when it was sold as LR approved used, I am its 4th owner.

I have an option to purchase a 2016 landmark for £6500 plus my disco (the garage are offering me the full price paid for the disco as part x), the Landmark has 80K on the clock, is due a service (don't trust the garage to service it properly - car supermarket) and has had one previous owner and full LR service history. The question is do I keep or upgrade? Is it likely that engine could fail again equally in either car. I don't have money to burn, and although the Landmark gives some nice extras, they are nothing that would make a massive difference to everyday life. So which car has the best chance of being most reliable? How badly will having a reconditioned engine fitted affect the value of the car (car was £19700 4 months ago)?

I appreciate all advice as I am at a cross roads, love the disco (had D3 before with 206K on the clock with no major issues), but reliability is a concern!

I would swap to the landmark..

The engine in there was built at the factory, yes the crank could fail, but that's 1 risk..

The other engine has the added extra of being reconditioned, who did the reconditioning? now you have the risk of the crank AND the potential that someone has partially blocked a hole with a gasket, not torqued something correctly etc etc etc..

Plus you'll get a little warranty from the supermarket and buy WD or similar for the new one..

There's plus and minuses for both.. it's just luck (or lack of it) at the end of the day..

I'd upgrade to the Landmark.

The reason for this is the overall resale value of a Landmark is likely to remain higher even after you've put some miles on it. The D4 with the recon engine will not be "loved" by you again and you'll worry every time you drive it.. What was that noise!.... is it worse on fuel...etc...

Take the risk with the Land Mark but get and FULLY read and ask directly if a Crank is covered (get this in writing)

Thumbs Up

I'd change into the Landmark.

Another thought is that the garage refitting the engine at their cost will be trying to do it as quickly as possible to get the ramps back on with making money.

+1 to change to the Landmark for the reasons already stated. It'll be a fresh start without worrying you every time you turn the key !

Too many questions remain regarding the recon and now's you're chance to rid yourself of it !

Me too. Just think “hey, ho - it’s only money”. You’d only go and spend it on things like food, wine & holidays. Whistle Whistle

so ... if crank had failed and you'd had to pick up the bill ... you'd have parted with more than £6.5K.

this way, you've spent less and upgraded and gone newer.

Interesting that everyone seems to be in the swop to Landmark...

Is it fair to say both have the risk of the crank going again? Also here appears to be some difference in terminology between re-manufactured engine, and reconditioned (2nd hand from another vehicle)? Does this make any difference to the outcome?

£6500 is a lot extra to put in, and although I can afford it I would rather not, but then if it is going to cost less in the long run doing this way.

Is £26500 a good price for a 1 owner landmark, 80K? It doesn't have any extras over the standard landmark features.

The current car has a 4 year WD warranty on it, and the engine should come with a 1 year warranty.

I guess it boils down to whether it is better the devil you know or not?

Thanks again for all your advice!

Interestingly the garage that is repairing the current car (which is a local garage and not the garage it was brought from) is in the keep the current car camp.

I love the current car, it has all the spec I need, and it finished in Loire blue (I have a thing for blue cars), and it was really at the max of what I was comfortable spending on a car...

If I am honest, and I was to spend £26500 on a replacement disco, I wouldn't buy a black Landmark with 80K on the clock in black, however this is the only car where a deal is on the table that I am going to get the £19700 back as PX.

Processing this nugget ...

Others may correct me but I thought WD were paying for JLR sourced engines ... which come with a 2 year warranty.

Changes everything ?

I’d trade up to the Landmark.

@ Hardware, WD it’s a bit of a grey area it’s on here they use Dragon Engines at Chesterfield to supply/fit.

I’ve also queried this with them, I’ve gone with full dealer rates thinking that I will get it to the LR dealer and as the dealer will only fit genuine parts, when asked WD about this, three times they stressed, You have the choice where it is repaired, we would not remove it from your chosen repairer.

The way things are headed with diesel cars it has to be the Euro6 model.

But a wise man might get rid of the current D4 and buy something cheaper and see how things lie in a year or two?
