This might be useful - when putting the small retaining nuts and bolt for the metal pipe back on the car I used the "small bit of paper in the socket" trick to grip the nuts/bolt, and mitigate risk of losing them! You can at least get them started using a small 1/4 socket by hand (i.e. without ratchet). You'll then have to switch to whatever works to tighten them back up.
