I have the tow trust towbar and it does need a good socket to slot into. The centre bolt pulls it up into the socket and holds it there but wouldnt stop any sideways movement.

First thing I would do is call and dealer and check if your vehicle recalled. If it wasnt, you'll get a nice new crossmember and a day or 2 driving a nice new courtesy car. After that, I'd fit a fixed tow trust bar.

Its worth a try but the recall ended a long time ago, you may get a goodwill payment.

Recalls typically don't expire. My D3 hadn't been checked when I called in with Duckworths and they invited me over for an inspection. The guy came out with a little tool, checked the socket and gave it the all clear.

I believe that it was classed as a campaign and not a recall that Land Rover had to carry out after there arm was twisted by the european type approval agency but they only did the bare minimum and loads of vehicles were missed for different reasons.
Somebody tried to get LR to start it up again after a number of new failures but they refused and therefore will not remburse the dealers if they carry out any repairs.

Is that so? Ok so nothing guaranteed then.
Duckworths (Market Rasen) seemed more than happy to oblige and said they would do the repair for free if necessary. Maybe Land Rover have left it at dealer discretion as obviously Duckworths wouldn't be footing the bill.
Anyway, always worth a shot.

You maybe able to get it done if the dealer make a case to LR, Duckworths are a good dealerbbut a bet there are a few that dont want to know.
If anybody has good results let us know

Many indeed refer to the tow bar campaign as a recall but it really wasn’t one. It was classified as a customer satisfaction campaign - in UK. it wasn’t active at all for example here, in Finland, which also caused some confusion. In case you wonder - the removable tow bar is identical here to the one used in U.K........

My 2012 car came with a tow bar addendum to say it’s a light load/light usage item that should be removed when not in use. If this wasn’t adhered to it was obvious to the dealer and they honoured replacement or repair for a short time only.
I believe there was an option to weld in a new fixture if required or if not to severe, it could be repaired by building up with weld and dressing back. 012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)

Weld on the receiver or on the removable bit? I'd thought about the latter as a fix.
Also got me thinking suitable shims might work. .

The receiver, I think a new detachable section was provided. 012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)

Thanks for all the info and advice guys. I lost faith in the removable hitch. Been perfectly happy with it on other makes, only LR seems to call it 'occasional use'.
I purchased a Witter fixed one for £185 and sold the removable one as suggested (thanks for that tip eightfoot!) It went for £150!
Knocking gone but I've lost some ground clearance. However, most important of all, I've lost that nagging doubt about what would happen if daughters horse trailer detached...
