how to remove excess oil?
I checked the oil level and thought the red balls on the dip stick were just wet from oil by passing through the tube, not by being submursed into the oil.
So I thought the oil level is low and I added a litre of new oil. Checked the level again and it is over the top ball.
What can I do to remove the excess oil? Don't want to lie under the car now in my freezing and wet garage.
What is the risk if I don't do anything?
I think you may to go under the car, if it a TDV6 they can sometimes reject having to much./to little oil in them, not quite sure though. Someone with more knoledge will be a along shortly, I'm sure of it!Ben

Some dealers now use an automated siphon system to remove oil. You could improvise with a narrow plastic tube and a good set of lungs via the dipstick hole - should be OK for a small amount of oil. Just remember to stop sucking before you get a mouthful!

Thin plastic tube down dipstick tube, and a plastic syringe stuck in the end ,if you can get hold of one. (I had to do this when dealer gave mine back overfilled. ). No risk of damage, just make sure everything is clean. Personally I didn't want to drive it with it overfull,(although I had already driven it 12 miles or so home from the dealers, and was going on a 400 mile round trip the next day). I pulled a litre out of it before level was at the top mark, it took about 15 mins, but better than removing & refitting sump plate / drain plug, I can tell you.

job done according dnd3's method!
Poored in a liter this afternoon within 5 minutes of stupidity,
Just believed that in such a huge engine, one liter would merely raise the level.
pulled out almost a liter again this evening in steps of a 10ml syringe...
Stupid me!
Thanks to all of you.

An empty washing up liquid bottle is a good stand in syringe, plus the hose of course.
