Removable towbar knocking! |
|
Hi all, Ive have my vehicle for about 7 months now and use it a lot for towing my Tin Tent. I use the removable towbar and have noticed that it has become increasingly noisier. When I first fit the bar, it 'clicks' home beautifully and is lovely and tight. It seems to loosen slightly during the trip though resulting in a slight knocking whilst travelling.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why, or what to do about it, or is this normal and I have to live with it?

Sounds a bit suspect, you wouldn't want to have play when towing yoru tintent.
Could be the spring that engages the locking mechanism is weakening?
If you got it new with the car, then Take it in to your dealers, parts are included under the 3 year warranty if supplied & fitted within one month of buying the car. Bodsys Brake Bible

Wonky,
I have very much the same as you describe but have not been aware of any knocking whilst travelling. Just that I noticed like you that it's not so tight in the tapered receiver as when initially engaged. I moved the towbar from my original D3 to the new one and have covered of the order of 7000 miles of towing with it. The contact faces show some burnishing but I would expect this. I took to greasing the contact faces with white cycle grease a long while ago basically to avoid any rusting of the receiver's flanks when the towbar is not in; maybe this deadens any audiable kloncking?
I had not been unduly concerned as the whole assembly is well secured by the cross pin and given the direction of the forces taken by the tapered socket some play is inevitable. It only seems tight initially because the machined taper on the underside of the cross pin forces the towbar's taper up into the receiver. However the spring strength pushing the pin home cannot generate similar vertical forces to that created by the towing load, though I have no doubt that they are more than adequate to keep the cross pin engaged. Its just that some slack seems to me to be inevitable.
I feel its a feature of the design rather that a cause for concern, however if you take it up with your dealer I would like to know the outcome please.
Got told by a french fellow caravanner two weeks ago that detachable tow bars are illegal in France. Just wonder how they cope with Disco3 if thats true; the LR fixed one only benefits from two drag-links, its vertical retention appears to be just the same as our removable ones. From then on did notice all french tow bars I saw were fixed.

Thanks Ocsid.
I hope that you are right, I don't feel there is a problem but I thought I'd ask of anyones experience. I don'r know that the dealer will be able to have any answers as I have little regard for them - much better and honest answers on here! I will ask though
Thanks once again

Most of us down in OZ are looking at every alternitive to that useless tow bar, some tow bar manufactures
are working on alternitives,,some have mobified the tow bar, and some like me have manufactured a complete new tow bar.
the problem for all is you can not get spair wheel out unless tow bar is first removed.
Once it is full of mud and dust it is nearly imposible to remove,
No good off road as it is far too low,
I can not emagine what LR design team were on when they came up with this horable thing. Mayby they were
at the pub all .
