With all the talk of the removable towbar issues - i just wanted to hear from people who use theirs.
My car has never towed, i have a new towbar and an I-for 3.5t twin axle trailer (best trailer in the world). I dont really want a fixed towbar at the moment and fit the occasional use, but i do have some heavy 3t-3.5t loads to shift coming up and just need some reassurance before putting the trailer on the back as i happen to like my trailer.
On other discos and rrs i towed a couple of times on the removable but only moving a trailer and the world has moved on.
I know the 150kg nose weight - which fits with ifor's max anyway - although the trailer seems to be nose down on the disco more than it wants to be.
But before i put 3t on the back i would like to know it will stay there!
go on reassure me Mike

Thanks - the issue is people leaving them fixed and them moving i understand...people must use them all the time though?
I dont want to buy a removable and fit it (i also dont want it on the car all the time as i wont always be towing) - hence would love not to...arghh Mike

I used a 12 x 6 caged tipping trailer (ifor) filled with logs, and I has no issues.
The detachable tow bar worked a treat
Hope that helps

logs wont weigh that much though,
ive done alot of towing with all my discos and have to say anything near 1.5 tonne+ i would want fixed, when trailers full of livestock your close to the 3.5t limit with the trailer and contents i would definitely not like to do this on a non fixed towbar theres a hell of a force going through it to the vehicle especially if you have to brake hard etc.
if you towing 3 tonne i woudl want fixed and to be fair for regular towing/commerial used i.e heavy towing LR does not recommend removable towbar.
other thing is the fixed to bar really aint hard to remove you can get them off in literally 15 mins if that so you always remove if not using for long periods of time

Thanks
The other factor is buying a fixed bar..i have the removable in the car! LR seem to recommend nose weight and regular use as the two factors, still rated at 3.5t - but i think im going to have to have another long think!
Im not moving livestock (yet!!) - i know i need the hitch to take +200 to -200kg nose weight when thats my life. it will have to be fixed then
Its just dead weight blocks, bulk bags, building materials etc at the moment.
The first are blocks i need to get up to a friend for his retaining wall this week, i know 32 are 1.5t and i have 42 to move up on Friday Mike

You have the trailer for removing heavy stuff, why take the chance?
What damage would be done if it detaches loaded?
It takes longer to get the spare wheel off and on than to fit the fixed towbar. L633 Defender

I dont understand why people leave the detachable on.
The easy answer is to buy the fixed, but when you are renovating an entire farm and house to live in both time and money are in very short supply Mike

I tow a 1500kg caravan.
To start with I was using the removable tow bar, but started to feel a very slight movement on acceleration / braking.
Changed to a Fixed multi-height bar and its rock solid and can obviously be adjusted to address any nose up / nose down issues on the trailer.
it might have been that the removable bar had worn slightly, but confidence is everything when towing!!
My advice would be to sell the removable on here (£120 approx.) and put that towards a fixed.
Good Luck and happy towing 2000 D2 TD5 - big red tractor no longer with us
2006 D3 - no longer with us and sadly missed
2010 D4 alas no more, but a lovely colour (Nara)
2016 D4 about to depart
2022 DS nearly...........

I use a removable one with a securing plate, guy on FB sells them. It securely fixes your tow bar in place so that it will never come out on its own. It’s only £25 so a no brainer really D4 MY15 SE TECH

Same here I have 3.5 ton ifor and the tow bar is secure with the plate. I never leave the bar in but having the plate makes it more difficult to steal as well. 2015 Discovery 4 SE Tech

3.5t with 150kg nose weight
The fixed have 250kg nose weight
Ive just ordered the fixed, genuine (or at least thats what it says!) - i want to subscribe to it will be ok, many people use it all the time all over the world and its designed and rated to do its job and i want to...but i actually like my trailer more than the car so its done.
Ill either sell or keep the removable.
