After running the tank down to 6 miles remaining enroute to the re-fueling station, this message appeared. Is this coinicidence or a built in program to extend mileage? Going to the Dealer tomorrow (AGAIN). I love my D3, but I am getting tired of warranty issues in general...2006 D3 Tonga Green

I don´t think running the fuel level so low is exactly a warranty issue, range remaining is fundamentally driven from the fuel level sender which will never be accurate to 6miles over a possible tank range of 350-500miles depending on petrol or diesel.
This may be a message to draw attention to the fuel level (as it will think you have ignored or not noticed either the fuel gauge or the low fuel warning light), or it may actually be reducing engine power as there is a risk of you sucking air into the fuel system hence the fuel pressure may not be constant.
LOL Simon! No, I do not run out of fuel often. I usually re-fuel at 1/4 tank. And for the record - I have never ran out of fuel...at least with this car. I was hoping that after re-fueling, the message would go away. Negative.2006 D3 Tonga Green

The D3 doesn't reduce engine performance when the tank is low. Certainly doesn't give that warning if the fuel is nearly gone.
You probably sucked up some crap from the tank by letting it go so low.
Just make sure your at least half a tank full before the dealer checks it out.

I've gotten real low on fuel a few times and never got that message before.
Like Simon says, maybe a case of bad gas Did you reset the computer (disconnect battery) to see if that clears it? You do put premium in it I presume...I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

His is a petrol, air in the fuel injection will equal lean running which can cause engine damage unlike a diesel (which would just cause rough running). Hence it may behave differently.
Agree with the muck from the tank bottom - although it would detect a drop in fuel pressure from that presumably.Cheers

IIRC Deondef had a similar message come up and it was a blocked fuel filter .
Disconnected the battery and the message went away for now. Thanks Tami - I just forgot to do the most obvious!! 2006 D3 Tonga Green
