Red battery light, then all hell breaks out!

Evening all, Dropping the dogs down to the vets when the red battery light came on. Shortly afterwards (3 miles) lots of the other lights come on, special programmes off etc. Then engine stops and all electrics dead. Wouldn't re-start and AA reckons a major short somewhere probably alternator. Burnt smell emenating from engine bay area.
After spending several hours awaiting AA and recovery finally enjoyed several Deuchars in the local. Oh and the dogs all sorted too! Any suggestions about costs of an alternator and difficulty of fitting, any other suggestions about what might have happened?
Thanks,
Duncan

Damn, not what I wanted to hear. Is there much work replacing an alternator? Does it damage the electrical system when it lets go?
Thanks

Hi Jollybodger

not normally. I would have the vehicle towed to an indie (if no longer under warranty) and let them remove the alternator for inspection.

You will also have to get the battery fully charged. I had it once before where an alternator was not charging properly and no indication was available via the battery light until the car was stranded with a totally flat battery.

Good luck!

Alternator isnt a big job to do, fairly straight forward.

And im pretty sure a genuine Re-con alternator is £175 + VAT Thumbs Up
