Yes, beam axles have a lot of resistance when buried in mud. I'm not sure how I'd have recovered that one
The fact that the tow rope was attached to the chassis, meant that whatever holds the axle on had to take ALL the force to free it. Because it was snatched, something had to give.
I reckon if they had resigned themselves to the fact that they were going to get muddy, climbed in the bog with a spade, cleared as much from in front of the axles as possible, and possibly attached the rope to the axle on the right hand side might have had better results.
A winch would have been less brutal, and much more controlled.
Anyway, it was a Jeep so what do you expect
