Reconditioned engine
Hi all. I'm new to the forum and have been advised there will be no better place to ask than on here about where to go to get a reconditioned engine for my Disco 3 HSE. My mechanic believes one of try cylinders has gone and called it terminal, I'm devastated as the car has huge sentimental value to me so I'd like to get it back on the road but have no idea on how to go about finding someone who can help, and for a reasonable cost. I've come across a guy on eBay who said can do it for £3100 but I'm not confident that the right way to go, something just didn't seem right when I spoke to him. Any advice or pointing me in the right direction will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Get your mechanic to strip and rebuild the original, its mist likely a piston thats failed.
Alternativley pick up a second S type Jag engine and get him to fit it it will be more reliable than a poorly remanufactured engine.Andrew

The first thing you need to do is to establish exactly what failure has occurred, and if there is any consequential damage.
This means you will have to spend money just to get to a a place where you can be accurately advised on the damage, and hopefully a clear indication of the total outlay required to sort it out correctly.
A LR specialist with experience of the TDV6 is key to the successful outcome of repairing these engines, especially should it prove to be a major failure.
Forget about recon merchants online or elsewhere, as the genuine LR parts are not easily available for these engines, but the aftermarket is flooded with cheap inferior components which is what you are buying. Often put together by a combination of experts resembling the Clangers and the Muppets jointly preforming brain surgery whilst snorting moon dust!!!
So your all singing and dancing recon TDV6 is extremely likely to be put together using cheap crap which will ultimately break your heart if not your bank account too.
See what your mechanic can discover with a bit of friendly encouragement, but ultimately it may need independent LR knowledge to nail it correctly. As Aja said earlier, a good and consistently successful route is to find a Jag S Type and break it, but replacing the cam chains, bearings, oil pump, & belts, etc before fitting.
Sentimental value makes an already difficult decision more expensive, and therefore all the more reason for you to get it right first time !!!
Whatever route you choose if it turns out to be a major failure it won't come cheap, but your starting point should be to establish exactly the current state of your engine, major failure or otherwise.
Oh ànd by the way, trust your "gut instinct" you'll find most of the time it's usually right!
Best of luck.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I bought mine knowing it had had a new engine, the owner gave a reasonable description of why it needed one, so I was happy. The engine had been supplied and fitted by Land Rover.Richard

I believe that's correct; certainly Oval Autos in Cradley Heath https://www.ovalautos.com no longer do 2.7 L engines.
I think that, quite rightly IMHO, their view is that it's not normally worth fitting a new engine to a pre MY12 car as the cost of the work could be more than the car is worth.
