Recommend me some tyres with a twist
Hi all,
I am looking for some tyres which are good for Green Laning and the occasional mud bath with out getting me stuck immediately. I belong to a response group and do traction assist from mud baths.
I also want to be in a position where they don’t loose there traction in snow and ice so I guess this rules out anything to aggressive like X3s?
They’ll be on 255/55/19.
The not loosing grip on ice and snow is key hence I thought about asking.
The car only does 4000 a year and so happy to step away from expensive stuff .

Hi,
Sounds like a cross climate All season tyre would suit you, I was looking at the Oponeo web site last week at that size and ISTR there were only about 5-6 options, Geo I think was on the list

Mud traction and snow/ice traction are different requirements needing different tyres. If snow/ice is the more important then any decent winter tyre would be a good choice. If the off road use is important but with some winter ability then one of the winter rated all terrains would seem to be indicated.
No idea how good the Duratrac is in winter conditions - Goodyear state "The Wrangler DuraTrac is designated with the Mountain Snowflake symbol for winter use. " so presumably it's decent enough (although it won't be as good as a full winter road tyre). The Duratrac is probably the closest you'll get to a tyre that is good in mud and snow/ice.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Aren’t GG AT3s winter rates whilst being a AT type tyre?
I have just ordered 5 Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 fitted & balance at £143.40 each.
They will be fitted early next week so I will report some time thereafter.

Yes they are. They're a good tyre on road and worked well last winter for me in snow. The limited off road use I had with them showed them to be competent off road - certainly green lanes shouldn't present an issue for them. Not sure they'd be much help in deep mud, however, if the OP definitely needs that.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

As discussed many times here, there is no tyre that is good for all conditions. If they are good in mud then they are no good on ice & snow, and vice versa. Tyre choice is a balance of compromises, the trick is getting that balance right for the individual’s circumstances.
Not that that helps any but I ran Pirelli ATRs and they were great in all but deep mud. Re ice and snow during several Heelands winters they did me proud but I was always aware that they were not a true winter tyre and drove accordingly. The most important part of tyres is the nut behind the wheel.

The OP seemed to want a tyre that would be good in two extremes which, as you say, no tyre is likely to be able to provide. I was trying to suggest a tyre that might be closest to that requirement - the Duratrac.
I've run the Pirelli ATR, the GG AT, the GG AT3 and now the Pirelli AT+. All have been good in their own ways, all have had weaknesses. I'd probably go back to the ATR if I thought I could keep getting them. I'll probably go back to the AT3 when the current AT+ need changing as I think the AT3's compromise better suits my needs (at the moment, anyway).

I’ve got Cooper ATs on my D3. They work well on green laning, moderate off-roading and snowy weather. I too am in a response group and have never had an issue. Traction is fine getting moving, but as with any tyre, the D3 becomes a massive sledge when trying to stop on ice!

Thanks all, lots of interesting reading
I’d say boogy fields and Greenlaning is the priority but snow etc a benefit.
