Rear prop universal joint size
Hi all,Quick question..am i right in thinking that it's a 75mm cup size on the universal joint on the rear propshaft of a 05 disco 3?
Feel free to correct me or point in right direction!Going to do rear bearing so may as well do uj at same time. And yes I know o should just replace the whole shaft instead but I'm a sucker for old school repairs!

You can't, as far as I'm aware, change the rear UJ. The joints are 'staked', there are no circlips to allow removal.
I changed my rear prop recently, and will send the old one to a specialist to replace the UJ. I'll keep it as a spare.Richard

Staked ones can be changed but one needs to ensure the final position is correct, doable but not easy without special equipment.

Had a look at few vids reg staked uj' s and as you say it can be done but it is a pain in compared to standard.I assume that you can replace with standard uj's and not staked or are the groves for circlips not present?

No circlip grooves, one of the points of staking, cheaper to make but not repair.

D3 & 4 Rear propshaft
Quick question in regard to D3 &4 rear prop-shaft, why does one need the centre support bearing and a two piece prop-shaft, when both rear differential and transfer box are fixed to the chassis and have seen longer prop-shafts on other vehicles where the rear differential is supported by leaf springs?
Has any one replaced the rear two piece prop-shaft with a single unit?

I imagine JLR had torsional vibration issues during development, and had to cure it with a split propshaft.
There is no business sense in fitting a complicated propshaft with 2 CV's, 1 UJ & a centre bearing.
I thought exactly the same. You would have thought a single piece prop with a sliding joint would have done it.
My only other thought was that the gearbox and rear diff are too well aligned, and UJ's/CV's dont like running dead straight, as there is no movement in the rollers, and the bearing surface will wear more quickly. So they put a bend in the propshaft to allow rotation in the CV / UJ?
Only guessing, I don't have any inside knowledge! Richard

Ok thanks for the thought, makes me want to put a single piece prop on, may go visit my local custom prop guy in Notts and ask the question!

That's sounds good, here in Canada, a rusty used one would cost at least the same price as ordering one from the England...
