rear prop shaft CV slinging grease
Gday All,
It seems the front CV Joint on my rear prop shaft is slinging grease. very confident its not oil from the TC. From what i can find its a known issue but not sure how common... Its the original shaft and the centre bearing is in tact and seems ok , so my question is - Has anyone pulled one down and seen if there is an oring or gasket that fails and allows the grease to escape. ?
I am thinking that if there is, it could be as simple as a new gasket and some new grease and it should be ok... seems a shame to replace the whole shaft if the rest is still ok.
I think the general consensus is to replace the entire propshaft. I did mine on Saturday and the front section split into 2 when removing as it needed a little encouragement to come away from the transfer box.

I would guess that final photo shows the metal seal that may have failed, or the gasket on the second last photo? It might be worth double checking the torque on the bolts if you have an E12 e-torx socket as to be honest I can't see how this UJ would likely lose grease.
Regards,
Steve

Thanks for the reply , the pics are worth a 1000 words as they say. I must say i thought the same in regards to being able to loose grease ,and when looking at it closely it seems to line up with the front cover which is in pic 2 with the tick on it , not the back where the boot covers the tail shaft.
I will do as you suggest and check the torque of the bolts ,if no joy i will drop the complete shaft and have a closer look.
