Rear prop shaft centre bearing

Hi All
My rear prop shaft centre bearing has collapsed, Shocked any of you good and knowledgable Bow down folks out there be kind enough to post me a how to for replacement, looks like a fairly straight forward job, but I would hate to be caught out for lack of asking.

Any input very much appreciated. Thumbs Up

Also need new pads and disks for the front, guessing that will be just over the £100 mark?

AIUI, the bearing can be replaced, but there has not been much success, as when the shafts go back together, the CV joints dont flex properly...

It's not a job I have had to do myself yet, but hopefully someone will be along soon to prove me wrong Whistle

The CV joints, at the ends of the drive shaft? What would stop them from flexing properly? I take it it's a case of dropping the drive shaft out, cleaning it up, removing the old bearing and on with the new? Is there an alignment issue with the CV joints? I could get that accurate to thou's if required, should there be any load on the bearing or is it just to act as a steady i.e to stop the shaft resonating?

What would be the primary symptom if the CV joints are not flexing properly, is it something I would know about before driving off?

Thanks for that, I guess I'll see how it goes, the second link is particularly helpful as I now have a pretty good idea what to expect.

I paid just over £200 + vat

Just the bearing can be got for about £40 + VAT, but by all accounts is a waste of money. Only a few on here seem to have had any success - tends to lock when the shaft goes back together so I understand.

Hope that helps.

PROP shaft centre bearing failure

well I have joined the club of failed propshaft for the rear!, turned just over 100,000 and carry out all oil services again to ensure all is clean in the oil baths and noticed this,

and got a nice bill of £307 all in for a genunie one from a very friendly man at Frank Ogg in Elgin, nearest dealer who was open on Satarday morning at a bank holiday weekend with stock!! Shocked

thankfully, 1 hour later got the new one on and hitched on the caravan with peice of mind, did think bearing about a prop through the floor pan!! for give the pun!

MOT this year found the bearing support rubber completely obliterated.
I had no noise, or any other indication that there was anything wrong with it.
I have just replaced my prop shaft centre bearing.
Having followed the "how-to" with corrections I found on the forum, I am quite happy with how it feels and sounds.
I think I will plan to replace the whole prop soon, but this cheaper fix is useful for now to get the car back on the road quickly.
I stumbled across an article in Auto Express magazine online after I'd finished mine, obviously, where they replace the bearing on an RRS!
The mechanic looked like the same guy that did the LRO technical items sponsored by Britpart.
Interestingly he left the CV complete in the rear section.
This seems to completely eliminate the issue with getting the CV back in the correct orientation, as long as you can mark it up to get the right spline back in the correct place.

I have recently changed my whole shaft assy. when the centre bearing collapsed. I looked into repair but I am glad I took the plunge and replaced the lot, as the UJ was notchy and the gaiter split on the front CV. It had done about 145K miles
