Rear Glass Antenna/connections

Rear window shattered whilst touring the outer Isles (Lewis). Must have been a sheep throwing a stone. Good tarmac surface, 40mph, no other traffic - the Island shuts on Sunday.

Anyway, the man from Autoglass eventually got a new window to me. However although it has heated window connections my old window has 3 other electrical connections to the glass at the top. one going to a red box on the tailgate frame and two to a white box.

Under the circumstances I got the glass fited (noting to the boss that it is the wrong one). However I need something now and can't wait another 4 days for a replacement. Will sort it later.

Question - what are the boxes connecting? they are supposed to join to the heating element. Are they part of the antenna system on a HSE? I thought the GPS was in the roof and radio/tv on the rear windows?

yes... side and tailgate windows are used depending on what part of the world your D3 was built for

Not sure about the boxes, what doesn't work?

On the HSE the rear window is used as an extra diversity antenna for the radio, and as the TMC antenna. The boxes will most likely be the amplifiers for each.

Thanks all.

At least I can tell the dealer why they need to fix it now. As for what doesn't work - well that was part of the issue as everything seems to work OK. However there is not much need for TMC here. There is no signal so I hadn't noticed it fail!

.A new market specific accessory for the Western Isles (and mabye Oz/NZ) would be the SMC (sheep message channel) to warn of sheep hiding around the corners on the main 'A' roads (single track) or a ShatNav to identify up coming sheep from the droppings on the road.

I feel a new thread coming on............!

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but does anyone know if an S model has a TMC connection in the dashboard area. My Garmin 310d TMC function does not pick up a signal in the Disco - probably due to the heated screen.

The Garmin unit picks up TMC data in other vehicles quite well, so I am confident that works.

Or are there any other solutions like hooking up to the car radio antenna in the dash. What have other people done?
