Rear Diff oil - fill plug |
|
So, managed to do the main oil gearbox/filter change and front diff, but struggling to undo the rear diff fill plug. I believe its a standard 8mm hex female socket, but tool just keeps spinning in the hole. Glad i checked this first before draining the oil....
The rear end is covered in waxoyl, so good that it kept it quite rust free, but its everwhere and assume helping to keep thread locked in place.
Any tips to undo without destroying it ?

A new plug is cheap, here is the code: FTC5431 (around 7€)
Best way of action (got a new plug and oil before do it) is to push inside the plug a torx insert bit of quite bigger size hitting on it with an hammer than unscrew it. - Easy-Lift suspension module 4.0
- GoodWinch 9500 lb
- Full underbody protections
- Tree/Rock sidebars
- Prospeed roofrack & ladder
- Compressor guard
- Raised Air Intake
- Driving lights (2+4)
- 50 mm Waffle boards
- Altox Heater control
- Overland Rooftop Tent
- Rear seats entertainment
- Front & Rear camera
- GVIF
- Removable tow bar
- Cubby box fridge
- BFG KO2 265/65R17

I have the same problem with my front diff fill plug, someone chewed it up. I've tried hammering a torx bit into it and it wouldn't shift.. it's now completely rounded out, so I think my only option is to weld a bolt or similar into it

I was thinking that might be the only solution.
If I remember right, there not much room in there to get a hammer on it, but will perservere.

Same problem here Lenny. What did you do in the end?
I'm going to have a crack at chasing it round with a hammer and chisel, but access could make that difficult. This might be the excuse I need to buy that welding rig I've being wanting, but that'll make it a rather expensive fluid change!

only problem with those thread extractors is if they spin they polish the inside of the plug and you're left where I am with the diff needing to come out to get the plug out 05 D3 V8 HSE, LR Passion tree bars, wildbear compressor guard, LRP switch panel, ARB rear locker + compressor, Trigger 6 shooter electrical system

True but if you are there now you have nothing to lose. It was difficult getting the right size, too small and it bottoms out, too large it does not have enough grip to stay in. Series 1 V8
