Rear Brake Line Replacement

Dear all, all our D4 has covered 82K and the rear brake lines are in need of replacement. I intend to use the preformed short metal lines for RH and LH sides LR021678 and LR021679, and oem Flexible pipes.

I am still debating wether or not to make my own brake pipes or buy the service kit to replace the corroded sections LH and RH that run the down the centre of car and then to the first set of flexi pipes.

My question is what type of the brake pipe connectors are used with the respective flare, are they
SAE or DIN on the D4.

Rear Brake Line Replacement - Progress

With the rear exhaust section and heat shields removed, the pipes were inspected. The forward pipe sections were in good condition with no corrosion present. The rear sections are corroded to an extent that replacement is required.

After stripping the rear LH and RH short metal brakes lines I was able to identify the fittings as DIN.

The following photographs show the front to rear brake pipes and corrosion. The last photograph is were I intend to cut the pipe. I am going to practice bending and flaring brake pipes using my hand held DIN/SAE flare tool. More later.

Looking good. Just a recommendation, you might want to think whether you want to lanoguard underneath while you’re on your back under there with everything stripped off.

The LH pipe is made and ready for installation!



Install tomorrow and remove RH pipe.

Watching on with interest as I’ve been putting off doing mine for a while now. After 3 years being advised at MOT I think it’s about time I bit bullet and got on with them.

Your pipes look brand new compared to mine by the way.

Hi Des - Thanks for your comments, much appreciated.

An update

The brake pipe work is finished and the system bled and checked for leaks. Altogether, all the pipes and hoses have been replaced from just aft of the DPF.

The pipes, which I made up from Copper Nickel, where fiddly to fit but not difficult. All the pipe fittings were DIN as such the pipes were flared with DIN profiles.

During the installation new pipe clips were used throughout.

To bend the pipes I used a LASER pipe bender, this little tool was excellent being easy to use and produced good bends. The flaring tool was the ASTA A-ROG203 DIN/SAE hand tool. I had no issues with tool, flaring the steel or CU/NI pipes. What was important was that proper preparation of the pipe before flaring, good preparation contributed significantly to the end result.

The callipers have been serviced and new discs and pads installed.

I think it’s important to say, although I am an experienced engineer (aircraft), In doing this work I learnt so much from the many informative posts made by other members, to those members a big thanks.

Well done Joneseric, I had cause to do this to mine (D3) a couple of years ago. Very satisfying replacing all that corroded pipe work. A bit like yourself, having worked as an engineer on aircraft, all my working life, it was still an education doing the pipe prep and flaring / bending etc. helped along by others who had done the same.Thumbs Up
 D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

All completed with new discs and pads all round.

 D4 SDV6 since 2014. 82000 mls.
BMW R100 CS since 1983 264000 mls we think!
