Rear Anderson connector - How Much Cable

I know a few folks have done this but I’m going to put an Anderson connector by my Towbar electrics to power my trailer winch.

For those that have done it do you know how much cable you used to get from the engine bay to the Towbar electrics?

You only need to run the positive feed back, the earth can go straight onto the chassis at a good earthing point

every winch supplier advices stricktly, to wire minus/earth directly to the battery, NOT through chassis

seems logic to me, given the possible amps flow with winching Shocked Wink

Yes I’m going to run both positive and negative back to the battery having read similar winch manufacturer instructions in the past.

Can anyone explain why the vehicle chassis is not a good enough earth for this application?

It is a genuine question, and not an argumentative starter, as I have on what I thought was an informed source, used the chassis as my earth.

Thanks.

From my limited reading on the subject there is a suggestion/theory that if you use the chassis then in a certain circumstances you could end up taking ground path through another electrical component with damaging consequences.

Worth noting if you watch the Powerful UK vid on the new Defender winch install the ground is connected to the point on the body where what looks like the engine earth connects to.

If the earth wiring to the chassis from the battery is substatial enough you wont have any issues

But we've had several posts recently involving failed earth straps, so perhaps worth considering?

Remember if you have to jump start your car LR say not to pout the negative jump led on the - tive side of the battery but on the earth stud on the body just in front of the battery - so the body is good enough fore the earth.

I have done exactly what you are asking about - I have run a heavy +ive cable from the battery along the top of the chassis to the passenger side electrical spot next the the tow point. The earth is bolted to the body (not the chassis) under the boot area. I have had my anderson plug there for 10 years no issue.

However running an electric winch some 9m from the battery is not a good idea - the cable you will need over that distance is going to be huge - bigger than welding cables - also you cannot use a "normal" plug you will need one of the big red ones - a winch on full load may pull up to 400 amps - why not put a battery in the trailer and then use what you propose to charge that battery.

Idealy you would also have a second battery

Yes I appreciate it is going to need some substantial cable I’ve already done some voltage drop calculations Smile

I will also be putting a battery on the trailer although time constraints mean it hasn’t happened, however I need a back policy as I don’t have any means of keeping the battery on the trailer charged as I don’t have the ability to keep it charged where it is stored.

euhh yes and no.... for winching you need a typical "starter" battery, because of the CCA involved when winching.. "most"auxillary battery's are deepcycle battery's and there fore not very good for winching...

you can everyting make to "work" but i suggest to do it the proper way if big currents, safety and longlivity are important...

i always make a difference between "roadside"/emergency constructions and lasting constructions.. both are needed sometimes regarding on circumstances...
