30mpg from 1st tank and 32 so far on second tank, which is about 3-4mpg better than my MY2013 D4 was on the same commutes
I would think this will also get slightly better as the engine runs in and my right foot gets a bit lighter on the 'go pedal' Disco 5, it's not every man's desire, but a connoisseurs choice

As stated all manufacturers claim (well, actually they can, have, proven these figures but in 'test conditions') numbers no-one recognises
If anyone thinks 40-50mpg is a 'realistic average MPG figure' in a D5 then they are smoking something
In context we had a Fiesta 1.6d and that across all conditions consistently averaged 53mpg and you think a D5 can get close to that.
Well considering the Montego estate we had many nearly 30 years ago did 50 mpg no matter what and father in laws 22 year old passat estate does around 50 mpg, I think modern cars mpg is disappointing.
Mind you given that some are claiming mid to upper 20's for their D3 V8s......==================================

The thing that kills all these big heavy cars mpg is increasing speed. They have become effortless to increase speed due to the good engines, turbos etc.
Although the D5 is a little lighter, i cant see it being enough to make much difference. It still requires a big engine (Or i should say powerful engine with the new 2.0 td).
I cant really see any of these type of cars getting much better until a decent hybrid option is introduced, with electric motors with instant torque helping the car change speed, or be 100% electric in the urban environment, which is again when the car is required to increase speed frequently.
I guess any improvement is great, but 40-50mpg average real world driving is just not realistic with the current technology.

It's not that the manufacturers "can" post silly figures, they have to post them and are not allowed to post any others Over the years they have got better at making cars that do well in the official test, hence the widening gap between real world and official test mpg
I thought everyone knew this by now...

My D4 does mainly stop start suburban driving on short trips. This kills any thoughts of economy and returns anything from 18 to 21mpg. On a run solo I get nearer to 27/28 and towing about 22/23. Never really see 30's ever. I looked at the Volvo T8 with a claim it does 135mpg and the reality is nearer to 35mpg.
Which is pretty good for such a huge car but not worth the £20k premium to do it.FFRR 2017 4.4SDV8 Autobiography. Cost so much I must be mad!

And you're really comparing an old smoker Mondy with a D5 as relevant I can go back even further to an old Peugeot estate which did 50mpg day in, day out. Fact it only had about 50bhp, took about 25 seconds to get up to speed (I won't say 60mph....) and was slow with a capital 'S'.
I had a number of Mondy's, latest one being 2008 or so and BMW 320d's and they all did 40-50mpg without too much issue but still not comparable to a 2 tonne 4x4 that is faster than any 'sports car' of my yoof days.......
