I've sent the PVC gearstick gaiter from my manual D3 to a company that makes quality aftermarket leather gaiters, and they're copying it as we speak. I'll be getting the leather version back on Saturday hopefully, so will post pictures to let you know what it's like. I have nothing to do with the company, but emailed them to ask if one of their other gaiters (a BMW one) would fit the D3 - they said it was most likely a little small, but were happy to copy mine and send me one FOC. Received and fitted the new leather gaiter - very pleased with it As I said in my OP, I asked the company if they did a D3 gaiter (to replace the damaged PVC one on mine), but they didn't, so offered to copy the PVC one (which I sent them) for free. I suppose they'll be selling them through their ebay site some time soon. The new gaiter is supplied without the plastic frame that snaps into the centre console, so you have to transfer that over, attaching it with some evo stick or similar. As the leather is thicker than the original PVC it's a bit more difficult to get it to snap into position, but with some minor trimming of the plastic centre console under the gaiter it's possible to achieve a good fit. This is the company's ebay shop - I have nothing at all to do with them, just letting you know where I got it from. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/TOP-GAITERS-BOOTS

Hmmm, they haven't asked me if the prototype fitted yet! Previously:

That will be down to how I installed it - the gaiter is attached to the knob by a thick rubber band (O-ring), so I probably need to pull it a bit further up.Previously:

I have just been quoted around £40 excl 'a lot of labour' by local LR dealership for a new gear lever gaiter. The leather ones via e.bay look the biz, but how easy are they to fit? Can it be fitted over the top of the lever, or does some of the centre console trim and the lever itself need to be removed ? . as someone else sair, LR should have just done a proper leather one from the start !!
The ebay gaiter is easy to fit - just need to glue it to the plastic surround that clips into the centre console, and secure onto the knob by a thick o-ring which you just transfer from the old gaiter. There was a small amount of trimming plastic to accommodate the leather, as it's thicker than the PVC, but overall took maybe 30 minutes.Previously:

I cant see how the gear lever knob comes off so that I can fit the new gaiter over. Do I need to remove the rubber side-pieces, or is the knob threaded to the lever? Best to be sure before I hack away at it and break something !
It should just pull off, upwards.Previously:
