How does this work? I know some of the cheaper units just over-fuel the car, ups performance but can cause havoc with EGR's and sensors etc. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

All this is doing is lying to the ECU about what the rail pressure is, ending up with a rail pressure at some offset above what the ECU thinks it should be.
Therefore, more fuel is injected into the cylinders as the rail pressure is higher but the injection duration and timing is all the same.
Not exactly sophisticated or anywhere near optimised And, personally, I'm not sure tying it to the brake pipes is a good idea

When you posted up this thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic33658.html asking for advice, why did you then ignore everything that was advised to you.
If it is a question of budget, then the difference between the plug in box and JE's offer that Bodsy alerted you to is peanuts (£17), and i know whose technology i would rather trust on my D3.
BHP might have sold plenty of those units to D3 owners, but i doubt many of them are members on here. That is most likely because the implications on the engine life of plug in boxes that do not interact with all the vehicle systems vs remaps which do, are well understood by the well informed folk on here I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Some boxes prolong the injection time not just increase injection pressure. What boxes cant do is play with timing advance or turbo boost parameters so they will never be as effective as a remap. A remap will also stay withing tolerances, a box may not. You can seriously damage your engine just to save £17. Why do this Zagonda ? There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

Not forgetting what Martin said too, fixing it to the brake pipes are definately a no no. Vibration and movement can/will cause wear, and eventual fracture and something nobody should consider doing, hence why nowt is fixed to them in the 1st instance
