Rattling noise from left and right front wheel Discovery 4
Owner since Feb 2010 of new Disco 4 bought in Cape Town South Africa.
After 7000 km made a trip first time with gravel roads and after some time the left front wheel started to make a rattling noise. Dealership told me by satellite phone that it maybe was a small stone between disk and coverplate. After removing left front wheel I found nothing and all looked normal. After another 300 km the right front wheel started to make same rattling noise.
After return in Cape Town dealer checked suspension bolts but all looked normal.
Some days ago driving on tar about 40 KM per hour in a slow left bend coming van the highway you could hear the sound again from the left front wheel !!

Somebody an idea ?

See and hear at

you got side steps or sliders?

something needs a bolt nipping up for sure!

i had an annoyiny rattle on my last car and spent a good few hours tracking it down to a badly adjusted bonnet buffer rubbing and so squeeking.

i'd had a good tug at every part near by front.

rattle sounded light so check the FBH (assuming you got one Embarassed ) exhaust, thats only thin metal so would sound like that

Dear Dave,

Thanks for your comment, I have no steps or sliders and remember the sound came from both front wheel areas, so may it be possible that there are small stones between brake disks and the cover plates on both sides ??

Regards

sounds to me like something is loose rather than a stone being caught, that would grid or be a varying rattle as the stone is tossed around.

could be the disk cover plate that is loose?

i think your in for a good rummage underneath to see what moves that shouldn't!

good luck

I have a very similar rattle ,had it 12mts now dealer can not find, but I'm starting to wonder if the brake caliper piston could be pulling back and letting the pad rattle Question Question
Cheers Ken

Have you checked the gearbox undershield (if fitted) has all its bolts in place?

as others have said, my bets on the main engine undertray or gearbox undertray, might also have a look under the nearside front wheel arch to see if the exhaust manifold is bolted to the underside of the turbo tight.

Best bet start with the easy stuff ie the undertrays as it sounds like a bolt is either rattling around the screw whole or has come out and dislodged on the upper side of the tray....... or stones caught up there Thumbs Up

I have experienced the rattling gearbox undershield problem several times during my 18months of D4 ownership. Seems to be a common problem. Usually only noticable at idle and can get very loud - especially for the pedestrians nearby Embarassed

Happened again this week. Went to tighten the 2 front bolts but both have rattled free!

Has anyone tried spring washers on the bolts and successfully prevented reoccurance of this problem?
