Random plastic bit found in rear

So I found this in the rear behind the passenger quarter panel. What is it for? It’s Land Rover branded Laughing

It’s a blanking plug for the tow bar socket. ( for when not being used). TBH, these get nicked if you fit them in the socket, so probably best left where it was.

Never had one nicked personally, but I secure mine with a cable tie to stop it falling out πŸ‘

Agree that they fall out more often than they are taken.
I once found mine on the ground behind the vehicle after a frosty night. My theory, condensation or other damp between the plug and the socket had frozen and forced the wedge shaped plug out.
In a similar way a succession of failures of floodlight bulbs was experienced due not to the filaments but the ceramic endcaps being forced off the envelopes by frost.

Lol, I've also got one of these in the storage space in the back, but I'm not sure my tow bar is of a removable type. How would I tell?

LArge green handle on the right hand side, with a keyslot in it. If you have the keys then the originalhave a peculiar flat handle to it.

Fixed towbars have heavy straps going to the chassis either side of the spare wheel

If you have the removable type then the concensus is to not leave them in all the time (hence the blanking plug) If you tow regularly then the should be removed, the locking pin tested and lubricated and the receiver cleaned of rust and wiped over with oil.

Refitting, it needs to be snapped up cleanly with the handle spun round without any force to remove the key. There have been complaints of them falling out but it is hard to see how if fitted properly.

HairyFool, thanks!

As I thought, my towbar is certainly not easily removable, so the red plastic piece is surplus to requirements!
