Raised air intake, mountings corroded......

Just a heads up to anyone who has a R.A.I. that has been on the vehicle for a long time.

My car needed a new windscreen for its MOT this week, and I had to remove the RAI at National Windscreens request. The screws that hold the top to the upright tube were fine, but the 3 screws that hold the intake to the car (2 in the wing over the side air intake, and one at the top of the A pillar) were all solid, and required drilling out.

Once the intake was off the car, it is clear that the rivnuts and bolts have corroded badly. There is also some bubbling of the paint on the front wing where the rivnuts were sitting.

Mine has been fitted for 4 years, 90k miles.

Suffice to say that I will be fitting new rivnuts, and bolts, and coating them with some paint before refitting the RAI.

Always fancied an RAI, any massive increases in wind noise? I trust it doesn't make any huge difference to MPG!?

Thanks for the warning Gareth. TBH I have been a bit worried about this. Will check when I get a few hours to spare!

Had same on mine, had to drill out a couple of fixings & replaced the Allen key type nuts with normal hex headed bolts so easier to take off again if needed.

Use stainless nut rivets so they won't corrode in the same way. Won't stop the rust on the bodywork though...

There is no noticeable change in noise or consumption, although you can hear the intake suck if you have the window open.

Stainless steel rivnuts available from here > http://www.memfast.co.uk/index.asp

And it's better in the rain, the rain doesn't stream across the driver's window. Smile

Coat the hole with some waxoyl before putting the rivnuts in and make sure the screws/bolts have a good covering of grease on them. Prevention is better than cure Whistle
