radiator coolant into transmission oil

Hello all,

I am in the annoying position where my D3 has starting having an annoying vibration at approx 1800rpm when under load.

I would normally have thought that this is the torque converter, but that was replaced approx 6 months ago.

Gear changes are SILKY smooth.

I have contacted Bristol Transmissions and they say that it could be collant getting in to transmission fluid.

Is this true?

If so, do i have to replace torque converter and radiator, or would a new radiator and full flush be sufficient?

Thanks for any comments!!

Nick

sounds a bit like they are trying it on!

I know when I had some coolant in the engine oil.

As oil rises, when I undid the sump plug (only half way!) orange coolant started coming out.

So you could try this with the gearbox drain if you wanted to rule it out

Did BT fit a new TC? - was the GB main shaft oil seals done?- if not that is your problem, judder is caused by lack of oil pressure to operate the GB clutches, this is caused mainly by the oil seal failing, BT change the oil seals as a standard practice, cheaper operators don’t Big Cry
You say 1800rpm, is this in any gear? - 26-30mph seems to be the speed vibration cuts in when accelerating uphill if it is the TC.
Most reputable garages can carry out or have a test done to see if the oil is contaminated, BT have a very good reputation and I am sure will stand by any work they have done.
Have you checked the prop shaft center bearing?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

No... I live in Luxembourg so I only sourced the the T/C from them.

So you think that it could be the gearbox seal rather then the t/c itself?

The chap that installed the t/c is very good, and he didn't mention the main seal. Can it be checked without dripping the gearbox?

Yep, that is what killed your old TC, gear box out to check and replace, the bearing wears allowing small movement of the GB input shaft which kills the oil seal = drop in pressure to hold the clutch(s) in = judder under load .
Down side is if left it will take the new TC with it. Big Cry

Small update:
I have sent an oil sample to BT, and they are going to get back to me when they have tested it.

In the meantime, by mechanic has taken the gearbox off, and has just called to say that it is the "ring for the stator" that is the problem. I don't understand how automatic transmissions work, so this doesn't mean much to me. I thought that the stator was in the torque converter, so if the ring for the stator is the problem, then surely that is the TC that is the problem, and should be covered by the warranty on the TC.

He says that this could have caused premature wear of the clutches in the gearbox, and is going to measure them all and replace as required.

Gear changes are lovely and smooth, so the thinks that the mechatronic and solenoids should be fine.

What do you all think? Does this sound right (in your opinion)?

Another small update:

BT have been honest, and have said there is NO glycol in the oil, so that it good news. Radiator is not porous!!

They are shipping a replacement TC out to me today (I just hope that it is a new one and not a reburbished one), so I should be back up and running towards the end of next week.

My mechanic will check all the clutches etc, and so I should be reasonably sure that my transmission is as good as I can expect from one that has done 200000Kms.
