Quote for gearbox oil leak |
|
Hi all,
2+ years ago I bought a Disco 3 TDV6 GS from 2008. It had a few issues but nothing major. One of them was a small gearbox oil leak, and I was told it was small enough not to worry about it, however, I would like it properly fixed.
I recently moved to a remote village in the Scottish highlands. The local garage was recommended to me as very professional and reliable but... the first thing the mechanic told me was "I hate Land Rovers" (sic). He gave me a quote of between 3.5 and 4K to replace the entire gearbox, I almost faint.
My question to you guys is: is it really necessary to replace the entire gearbox to fix an oil leak?
I will look for another assessment and quote, but being so remote makes it a bit difficult, I rely entirely on my car here.
Thank you all in advance.

Hey Pete K.
I don't know, but I'll ask on Monday.
I imagine you're asking because it would make a difference in the approach to repair, correct?
After buying it, I got it to the mechanic and he said "Gearbox has slight oil leak - Advice: remove and replace gearbox seals with oil change"

I ask because it’s common
Doesn’t require the gearbox removing
It does require the gearbox sump removing though
