Quick Q? about fitting towbar electrics |
|
Hi, I've just fitted the twin electrics to my D3 and although I managed to get the cables up past the weight hanging at the back I could not see any way of clipping it to the chassis as shown in the 'instructions'. I did clip it behind the sockets where everything is accessible.
My question is, does it matter? The cable is out of the way and laying along the 'shelf' of the rear cross-member but I guess the weight could be swinging against it. Did anyone manage to use these fixings?
Thanks, TJ

Mine is the same. It was dealer fitted when the car was new and 3 years/94k later its not moved, so you should be fine.

Hi TJ,
sorry for OT, but could you do me a plesure and tell me exactly, where the entry-point of the wiring loom is ?
I´ve just come upstairs from laying under the car, but i did not find an entry at all.
A limitation of the search area could be very helpful.
To your question:
I´d try to fix the wiring loom with double side sticky tape to the chassis, so that the weight can´t reach the wires.
Regards
Andre

Andre,
The cable runs across the top of the rear-cross member, then up the inside corner of the bumper to make the connections just below the light cluster. I had to run the cables above the weight, pulling it forward slightly to make room for the plugs. Once everything was pulled through to the corner it was quite easy to drop the cables down into position.
Two of the plugs reach easily up to the rear light cluster area, the third is a bit shorter but you can just make the connection as will pull up to about an inch above the bumper housing.
The entry point into the car is through the big grommit that sits behind the light cluster. Pop out both grommits (one outside the car and the other behind the boot trim) and discard. The wiring includes two new grommits already fitted to the loom.
Hope this makes sense.

I ran my cables through the rear member so that it was protected, it was a fiddle but I managed to route it.

Hi all,
thanks for the hints, that does make sense.
I dismounted the light cluster and found everything as described.
I hope to manage the job today
