Question on engine bay sound

This morning, while brushing off snow and ice from the windshield, I noticed a new sound from the right side of the car which is LHD. Hadn’t heard it ever before/previously when brushing off snow. Wink Kind of like a very high pitched constant whine.

At the time the engine was cold from overnight and the temperature was approximately -5 C. I did not, unfortunately, think of checking if I would hear the sound again with engine warm and 30 min driven.

It seemed like it would be localized close to the air intake so I thought it might be the ac compressor whining. I looked at the Haynes for a 2.7D and it seems like the alternator would be more forward in the vehicle. I assumed that would also be the case for the V8. Plugging in my trusty IID there were no codes and the voltage seemed all right (didn’t record it though) with seat warmer, front and back windows, xenons, radio, etc. on at the normal idle ~700ish rpms.

If it was the AC compressor wouldn’t the sound be heard inside the cabin or would it be just the blower that can be heard since it inside/underneath the dashboard?

Both auxiliary drive belts were changed less than a month ago as were the idlers and pulleys.

Has anyone else ever heard or experienced something similar?

Even using a very generous definition of “snow”, depth is currently less than 1 cm here in the capital. So I had a few flakes and the rest was just frost.... Big Cry

When its -15 here in NYC, noises from the engine bay might be a bit different do to all the belts and mechanical stuff being stiff from the cold. Unless you have a exhaust leak.
Have you changed your PVC?

Yeah, the PCV valve (the saucer) got changed to a new one at the same belts and the spark plugs were changed about a month ago.

Plenty of vapor coming out the back from both exhausts, nothing from the side or underneath the engine.

I don’t have one on mine neither original or aftermarket Very Happy

It does exist as a LR part on at least V8 vehicles sold in Canada Thumbs Up I/we looked up the part numbers even for a thread on the FBH forum. Aftermarket would either be from Calix or DEFA (at least).

I think Bodsy mentioned that FFRRs tended to have that thing installed on the Websto forum thread.
