Can anybody tell me how to put the engine in neutral without the engine running to perform maintenance on the rear brakes ?
Thanks

ok but if you change out the rear discs it is necessary to be able to rotate the disc for adjustment
otherwise you have to start the car but first you have to reinstall the calipers and pads to put the gearbox in neutral

You dont need the transmission in neutral to change the rear disc. Any movement will be allowed by the differential and have no influence to the gearbox or transfer box.

I'm not with the car at the moment but I think that you can have it in neutral by doing

1. Start car
2. Put it in neutral
3. Stop car

If I remember correctly both for the 6 speed and the 8 speed that then leaves it in Neutral with the engine off.

No. Neutral is not necessary. Chocking wheels is though.

it is wrong because when the car is off the gearbox shifts to P and it is not possible to rotate the wheels. Are two possibilities keep the car running in neutral or release the safety lever (red color) placed under the tunnel

Have you actually tried what has been suggested . I have many times had to move the rear wheels at no time have I ever had to pull the red lever. My 16my stays in neutral if you cut the engine when its in neutral. Certainly the differential allows a wheel to move when that wheel is jacked off the ground . So to be totally clear you cant move a wheel if they are all in contact with the ground. however as soon as its raised clear of the ground you can move that wheel, there will be a little mechanical resistance but not much.

I confirm that after a few (not check how long) minutes of which off the engine the gear go on parking mode (ZF 8 speed)- I remember in the past that even though I had a wheel raised with the gearbox in parking mode the wheel didn't rotate... but I'll try again !
