Protecting underneath from the start - Waxoil |
|
This is a question for some of you higher mileage chaps
New Disco3 due in June. How does the rear suspension / hind qtrs fair with a winter or two of salt mud stones etc. Are mud flaps going to help that much?
I ask if it is worth while getting under there from new with a liberal application of waxoil ( or other suggested products ) ?
I am to have a full size spare, is it wise to wrap said spare in two or three bin liners?
Thanks for an informative forum so far. All the "bad news" has not deterred, I just feel forewarned as to the travails of ownership.
By the way, this is my first Landrover, am looking forward to a bit of gentle off roading to start with. Anyone know anywhere in North Yorkshire that might offer a gentle introduction to offroading?
Thanks to all NOW SOLD: 2006 TDV6 SE Auto Zermatt silver with Alpaca Leather

Hi Simon
I waxoiled my new D3 immediately after collection, I also treated my previous two disco's. I apply two generous coats, taking care to avoid the exhaust and brakes. I suggest that you reapply a single coat every other year, although the waxoil tends to stay put provided you don't go off-road and wear it off.
However, wrapping up the spare in plastic could result in moisture retention, which may lead to premature corrosion, particularly if it is a steel wheel. I apply waxoil to the spare. *Disco3 7-seat Auto

Apologies for being the dunce here but how long are you guys going to be keeping the motor to warrant having the waxoil treatment done? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

If it proves to be a reasonably reliable car and no one shunts it, I am intending to keep for 10 years or more.
That is of course that we dont get taxed off the roads by some looney tune militants that cant find a decent cause to follow.
Thanks for the responses to my original thread.

I also used Dinitrol for underneath when the car was brand new. 3 + 5 liters totally. Orinal protection was very poor, just painted. Really you should improve if you plan to keep car longer than 6 years.

What if the disco is 9 months old ? Are there any problems with applying a coating ? Does it involve having to clean any grime ?

Hi ej
Underbody sealants such as waxoil should be applied to a clean surface wherever possible. This ensures effective protection against chlorides and other corrosive compounds, which adhere to the underside of the vehicle. Where sealants are applied over a coating of mud, this can actually prote corrosion by creating a void, which can retain moisture and allow the wax to break away. I would recommend a high pressure wash or better still a steam-clean prior to application. *Disco3 7-seat Auto
