Propshaft middle bearing rubber. Advice please

Thank you for taking a moment to consider this. At service, the specialist noted that the bearing rubber on my propshaft was splitting. They have quoted a fortune for a complete propshaft. I have noticed that you can buy the bearing and rubber alone but I assume that’s a pig to fit properly and, therefore, the garage want to replace the whole assembly. I want this to be done correctly so I am happy with that. My question is, is there a quality aftermarket unit that would be suitable but save some cash over an LR unit. I have seen complete units, ranging from £89 - £600! I want a quality part but if there is a respected patten please could someone advise?
Many thanks,
Charles.

A bit of a pain to replace center bearing and not always successful.

GKN is the OEM propshaft .

Thanks. That’s far more reasonably priced. Excellent information!

A few people on here have repaired the rubber using sikaflex, also quite common on cars to stiffen up the susp bushs for track work and of course as a cheap bodge!

Ten quid a tube, support prop to support the bearing assy in the centre of the steel d ring then fill all the gaps with sika, smooth over and leave for 48 hrs to cure.

Changed mine almost two years ago and have done over 30K miles without any problems. There is a "How to" on You Tube and it's fairly easy but messy dismantling the UJ.
Buy a quality housing with a reputable bearing fitted (SKF, FAG etc.) and a tin of Moly grease.
Decent vice and a puller to remove the old assembly is useful.

Similar setup on the Freelander propshaft but without the VCU and I replaced those a few times.

Too many "Disposable" components on cars today-is this because the skills and initiative to strip and repair them have disappeared ? Sad

I live about 6 miles from a main GKN workshop and they fitted a new centre bearing, balanced and painted my prop for about £110.

Whilst filling your bearing rubber with silicone is a cheap and easy fix, it may cause a vibration if you put too much in. I did this to an engine mount on a diesel Mondeo and it made it worse.

The problem with the D3 prop is you remove it to replace the centre bearing and find the rear u/j is notchy and the caps are peened in rather than the traditional circlip.
Add up parts/labour and potential for isseus later on and its new every time.

Most will have done at least 100k on the original prop, thats not bad in my eyes and most people will only replace it once in the vehicles life.

Polyurethane; definitely not silicon!
I've had 2 D3s with Sikaflex and 1 D3 with a replacement prop.
None have experienced prop vibration.
If it vibrates afterwards, change the prop and you've lost the grand total of maybe £10.
