HI all just had MOT done all good apart from advisor Propshaft bearing has slight play ( RUBBER DETERIORATED) called in the local 4x4 garage and they recommend that it would pay just to change the whole shaft any advice and thoughts
I would not have known there was any issue as there is no noise etc

Repair or replacement of the UJ joint generally is not recommended. The usual recommendation is to replace the shaft with an original part. I believe GKN were the original manufacturer, but a search on here should confirm.

Steve

Most replace the whole rear propshaft. Although there’s also some that repair small splits with a sealant.
Here’s a topic with a poll on people’s approach. Plenty of other info on here regarding this subject. Search ‘propshaft’.
Mine wasn’t split badly at all but had mine replaced at around 30,000 miles which isn’t unusual as you will see. I got no vibration or issues whatsoever ever. GKN is the favoured make.

The centre bearing can be replaced and although a bit fiddly it is not difficult if you are reasonably competent and have the tools.

If you have to pay someone to do it then a complete shaft replacement is the way to go. Thumbs Up

If you replace it, GKN is the way to go. Thumbs Up

If it's only moderately split and not making any vibration/noise, why not just Sikaflex it for £10?

Very strange.
I've gone through a number of MOT's with a known knackered centre bearing. Tester is happy.
No clues in cabin and I will get around to it one day honest.

Just proves how subjective MOT tests are
