Problem with Halogen to Xenon Headlamp unit swap.

Has anyone swapped the Halogen units out for Xenon units ?

Specifically from an 05 MY (Xenon) to an 08 MY (Halogen).

I've just done this and...

When the lamps are first turned on, they flash on and off 3 or 4 times before staying lit. If you then turn them off and back on again, they light up straight away. Sometimes this does not happen.

If you leave the lights off for say 5 mins, they flash again when first turned on.

Has something changed between the 05 and 08's that causes this ?

Xenon units were standard on my S at the time and have never exhibited a problem.

Does the 08 need configuring to tell it that they are fitted ?

Assume wiring is still the same for all types of lights (except maybe adaptive) as it was in the past.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Simon

Simon,

I'm sure all Xenons do the flashing thing when cool to allow the gases to ignite. Have seen this on many cars so think it's fairly normal.

Really ??

They never did this for three years on my 'S'

When they came on from cold in that D3, they flicked on slightly dimmer and brightened up after a few seconds.

Asking around no one else has seen any flashing on and off when switched on.

Looks kind of cool, but not sure if its going cause any damage to the units long term Neutral

So your lights flash on and off 3 or 4 times before staying lit ?

Sorry - should have read more closely (tiny screen I'm looking at) - you're right - it's probably not correct. Embarassed I'll back out... sorry

Simon, Mine flicker sometimes when I switch them on. It's like a gradual powering up in steps type thing. Been told it's quite normal.

DD, its not a gradual thing, its on off on off three or four times.

Also the high pitched buzzing you get from the units goes on off on off too then settles down to being continuous when they are lit.

Si - I'm fairly certain the wiring is the same. I've currently got MY '08 halogens in mine (MY '06/55) while the dealer is running my xenons (the ones with the intermittent shutter fault) in one of their new demonstrators to try and replicate the fault. So it should be a straight swap.

Hi Simon
iv'e just had a hunt around my parts fiche and there isn't anything listed from 08my onwards so the usual
XBC500042
XBC500052

should still be good....

What numbers have you got on the Xenons ?...there should be a sticker on there to identify them
 TLO has left the building.......

Nick,

They were the ones on my MY05 D3 so whatever the 1st build was.

Dealer seems to think it may be a configuration thing in IDS that needs setting... but they are not sure (IDS is playing up so will have to pop back).

Had a quick thought, maybe the headlamp relay is different and not enough power gets to them initially to fire them up. Once they have had enough charge they stay lit and as they are 'warm' they then come on 1st time if you switch off and then on. Leave it and they go 'cold' and flicker again.

Very strange.

Could there really be a config setting that tells the D3's electrical system to output more juice if Xenon's are fitted ? Would seem an overly complex / very clever set up just for headlights.
