Private Plates
I have seen a plate on DVLA website that I would like to put on the D3 I have on order.
Am I better off buying the plate after I get the vehicle, or can I buy it now, and get the plate put on by the dealer? Would I have to put it on retention first? Never done this for a new vehicle before, so am not sure how it works.

it's quicker to buy the number now, get the certificate and relevant forms and then give them to the dealer as first reg documents with the vehicle. That's how I did mine anyway!

I think that when you buy the plate it includes the assignment fee and you hand the documents to the dealer before the car is registered.
However it depends when you are getting the car. When I changed over my personal plate in March I was told by the DVLA that I could wait up to 6 weeks. So I had to put the plate on retention (the dealer wanted the car registered in March) and then once the retention certificate came through I had to fill out the assignment details to put the plate on the car. How long does the form last before it expires? If it's only a month, I will wait a bit, as vehicle is due end June.

it will be on retention for 12 months be careful thou you may have probs when you sell the car and want to keep the plate if the car was 1st reg with a private plate not 100% sure I'd check first
Just for info I found the whole process extremly easy. Found a plate, paid my money, received a certificate 2 days later , went to local DVLA office and transfer took less than an hour. Loving the power of the TDV8!

It does not cause any problems if the vehicle is first registered with the private plate. All that happens is that when you sell the car a new registration will be provided for the car with the year from when it was first registered - most of the cars I have owned have had the private plate on from new.1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

Correct Ken - I have had a private plate for a number of years and at each of the last two purchases (both brand new) I was advised to have the car initially registered with a year plate and the transfer on my own plate after.
It make sit easier to sell too as when you swap the plate back off, the DVLA then put back on to it the original plate.
I have my plate on a V778 at the moment for when the D3 starts to look old (55 plates do already ) - in the next few months (before 56) I'll stick the private plate on.

I'm surprised VA managed a 'walk-in' - my dealer told me that the local offices were going to be postal service only, which would make his life difficult. As it is, it's almost impossible to ring the local office.
If you do send papers off, check the local office's address on the DVLA website; I sent mine off to the address shown in the V???? form given to me at the PO and it came back 2 weeks later with 'Return to Sender' on it - the bu88er$ had moved and not bothered with a forwarding scheme!Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

Echo Steve's comments at Old Trafford - good service - v quick
Getting plates made slightly less so, utility bill, passport, DNA sample, family tree ect - and then I cracked the B*****d replacements putting them on the car the D3 replaced and had to go through whole Halfords procedure again.....Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.
