Do you think that it is worth changing the oil/filter more often than annual service, assuming mileage between annual services is 10-12K or thereabouts and not towing anything? Also, is there any substance in the idea you should wait a minute or so before turning off the engine to stop the turbocharger bearings running dry? My aim is to still be running this 2004 model (TDV6) in 10 years time.

Changing the oil (& filter) more regularly than the scheduled intervals is always a good idea and is totally budget dependant. I do mine in-between every service.

As for the turbo, it's less of an issue than with a petrol turbo'd engine (due to fewer revs), but it still isn't a bad idea to give it a little bit of idle time to allow oil pressure on the bearings before turning off. Thumbs Up

Changing the oil cannot do any harm (unless you cock it up), but mine has done over 100k miles on standard service schedules over 3.5 years and runs perfectly. No excess engine noise, zero oil consumption, little black smoke, and never need to top the water up.

Slightly OT, but I've decided to add a bottle of Wynns Injector Protector @£5.99 every 5k miles between services.
I've also invested in a K&N Filter with a 'milllion mile' warranty.
[Just under 9 times more mileage than I've already done and the warranty will be void!] Evil or Very Mad

I've had the oil changed every 10,000kms and I've just ordered a new air filter at 32,000kms. I intend keeping my D3 for a long while so I want to ensure I keep it in as good a mechanical condition as possible.

I assume this is their "wash in petrol, reoil when dry" products, Ron ?

Have you noticed any improvement in acceleration ?
Some Folk use Pods on cars, but they have very small surface areas and require frequent attention.....
this does however allow greater air-through though.

In my

humble opinion.....yes

...its a balance between the money you spend on additional oil changes & the "life" left in the engine in its latter years.
You cant put the metal (the difference between a worn engine & an unworn one) back that is worn away....

I agree that the synthetic / semi synthetic engine lubricating oils available today are much better than those 10 years ago...but the one thing they cant do is accommodate any more debris & contamination...this is one of the reasons oil is changed out. Engine lube oil can be re-cycled & reused (& is in some industrial/marine applications).

I would go for reasonably priced oil good quality......& changed as often as you think it should be..say half the distance of the current D3 service period
...one reason that service intervals have grown to > than 10k miles is the marketing ploy to make diesel engines as or more attractive that the petrol counterparts....its not that long ago that diesel vehicles had different service intervals.....oil changes between the actual services.

as an example......I ran a Volvo 240 engine (B21E) way past 350k (hard driven) miles & it still had good compressions & bearings when car scrapped (22 years old) the engine still survives in another vehicle.....the engine oil was changed every 6k miles.
On the removing the cam shaft cover & sump it was very clean...testimony to frequent oil changes.

On todays engines with Turbochargers (especially diesels) its important to change oil frequently...the crap that is built up by stop start driving over long periods, residing in the engine lube oii......just isn't what you want to get in the fine passages that lubricate & cool the turbocharger bearings...remember this device is spinning at over 100k revs...its easily (& most usually) damaged by lack of lubrication.

I change engine oil on my D3 at 6k-7k miles...as a precaution that I may be stuck with the vehicle long term...you cant turn the clock back....running the engine at tick over revs before you start a journey & when you have completed a journey before turning off is also good long term practice in managing the life of any engine.

Yes Neil, it will need 'K&N oiling' at some point but not yet read/found out when.

I've got a JE re-map, but yes there is an improvement in performance and also MPG
Was getting around 27mpg at best, now getting 29mpg = +7%

IMHO As long as you use a good quality oil and dont spend your life doing stop start journeys i.e get chance to burn out the impurities there is no need to change the oil more frequently. To prove this mobile ran two identical cars and changed the oil (mobile one) at 7500 and the other car at 15000. Both cars finished 200000 miles and were stripped down and found to be in perfect condition and proved that the changing the oil at 7500 had not made any improvements to wear.

They then took a BMW and followed their standart service schedule for 1,000,000 miles , disassembled the engine and it was still within tolerance for leaving the factory.

Its proof like that and personal experience of running a vaxhall cavalier taxi to 375,000 miles that leads me to believe there no need to throw money away on needless oil changes.

Cheers

Chris

Hi ronp

how much did you pay for the filter and did you go for the upgrade kit? I see there is a dealer in Cotgrave but want to go armed with some info!

Thanks
Andrew

Hi ronp,

on the website http://www.knfilters.com/search/appsearch.aspx they talk about better air flow direct to engine and such..
