Pre-Heater not working?....is it fitted?
My 05 (purchased in autumn 2005 on 55 plate) - doesn't seem to have a functional pre-heater? (Assuming one is fitted- How can I tell for sure?)
I started the car up today in -4 degrees temp and then went to check the near side front wheel arch where I've read that the "exhaust" for the fuel heater is located - I couldnt see anything that resembled an exhaust (though there was what appeared to be a hole in the chassis to the rear of the suspension arms) - and there didnt appear to be any "heat" or "exhaust coming from anywhere?...furthermore after 15 minutes of stationary running the temp gauge was still in the "cold"?
So how do I tell definitivley if I have one fitted?..... and assuming I have, how do I get it to work??
What's your fuel levvel like at the mo ? Hole you are looking at is way too far back. If you search some of the posts about remote FBH there are a good few pics. Exhaust is small stainless tube about hosepipe diameter, towards front inboard of passenger side (UK) front wheel arch.
If it's UK spec and Diesel - it will have a FBH unless someone has stolen yours . . . ."To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Hi Dealmaker ,
Open the bonnet and on the n/s you will see the FBH unit along with exhaust for it too.
FBH itself is situated behind headlight on NS, if all the criteria are met - coolant temp, outside temp and enough fuel it should fire up and run. Exhaust gas is subtle, but gentle ticking from running heater with bonnet open is easy to fathom !!"To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

I kept struggling to see the exhaust as I could never remember where it was when I first was looking into it.
Passenger side. Look in front of the tyre, fairly low down, you should see a small silvery/chrome pipe angled at the end pointing back under the engine.
To check it working when you first start the car stick your hand a inch or so away from the end of the pipe, that way you can feel any fumes coming out before it gets too hot. In this cold weather looking under there you should see some smoke in the first couple of minutes.

normally you can hear the FBH but occasionally it is quiet. if you hold the water pipe that comes out of the pump you can feel the vibration. The pump works at a different speeds. some time its goin hell for leather and other time its just ticking over.
Or, simply put your hand over the end of the silver exhaust pipe and you can feel the exhaust. DONT TOUCH IT COS IT CAN BE HOT

Yes - it's as obvious as the nose on your face when you know what to look for! - The car definitley has it fitted an it definitley ISN'T WORKING!
I tried it this morning - car full of diesel - outside temp was -1 Degrees - NOTHING from the exhaust of the unit - and after 10 minutes it was stone cold. As furher verification I started the 09 - exact same conditions - the exhaust was too hot to touch within 1.5 minutes!
So how do I kickstart my (out of warranty) 05's fuel burning heater into life??? Anything I can try?

Try a battery disconnect, this will clear any 'soft' fault codes from all control modules, if you can hear the fan run-up in the FBH, check that you can hear a 'ticking' from the FBH fuel pump located on the gearbox crossmember (listen for it below the drivers door) Other than that, it's off to a LR dealer or Autologic - equipped independent
Sorry couldn't resist, but it might be worth checking (if it's got one ). Not to scare you, but when I took mine into Stratstone because it wasn't working last winter they put it on diagnostics or something and the whole thing nearly went up in flames in their workshop Apparently it filled the whole workshop with white smoke before they got the thing disconnected. Needless to say it was replaced under warranty.
There's one for sale on ebay at present, click here if you do need a new oneLRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.
Sorry TFC, you were quicker on the keyboard. Yes, you could always take it to your friendly independent D3 specialist who'll probably know a damn site more about it than your local stealers. LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Hmmm, there is a great Autologic-equipped independant somewhere around here Even has VERY current experience of FBH fixes
