Have a good search on the site for pre-heater. This topic has been the subject of much discussion from day one. It seems you must have an early model D3 if you still have access to the pre heat settings as they were wiped out a couple of years ago by various software upgrades. The cars still have a fuel burning heater (FBH) though that fires up automatically when the outside air temp falls below 5°C. It's purpose is to heat the engine's coolant, thus allowing the engine to warm up more quickly. I think at one time, you could use the pre-heat setting to program the FBH to fire up at a certain time, pre-warming the engine coolant before you used the car but it proved troublesome so the feature was removed.

Sounds like you've not had the VEP carried out yet dubiousp if you've still got those menu options
