Potential buyer with a few questions. |
|
Following on from my intro in the welcome section here http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post1096695.html#1096695 I am thinking about buying a Discovery 4 and have a few queries. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sorry if most of these questions have been asked before, I did search but couldn't find them
1) When exactly did the Disco 4 change from a stick gear shift to rotary?
2) With the stick gear shift does it also have flappy paddles or can you only manually shift by pushing the gear stick forwards and backwards?
3) Is there a set service schedule/interval or is it CBS?
4) What are the approximate service costs, and are there any 'big' services I should be wary of?
5) I am planning on doing some gentle off-road (more than just going across a field, but nothing too extreme), are 20" wheels completely out of the question or are these still OK?
6) Can someone please tell me what the wheel/tyre sizes are for 20" wheels so that I can look at tyre prices?
7) Is the stated urban MPG of 28.8 for the SDV6 accurate or a pipe dream?
8) Excuse my lack of knowledge in this area but what situations would you need the active rear locking differential optional extra, ie how does it help you out? I assume by active it means automatic, if you don't have this option do you get a manually lockable rear diff, or does the rear diff just not lock at all?
TIA, sorry for all the questions

Unnecessary quote removed
Many thanks for this, very helpful. Can I just clarify a few things please? You say the service is split into service A and service B, does this then just keep rotating from A to B? Is the £400-500 for service B, ie the more expensive one? If so what is the cost of the cheaper one?
With the mpg figures I assume by a "few" you mean 3-4mpg, making it more like 25mpg? My current car gets 16-18mpg, I assume the Disco is considerably better than this?
One other thing I meant to ask was regarding warranty. I assume you can extend the warranty on a yearly basis after the manufacturers warranty/used car warranty has expired? Any idea how much this costs roughly?
Cheers

I think the A service (Oil Change mainly) is a couple of hundred.
When I asked about an extended warranty at LR Leicester it was around the £450 mark but it does have its limitations. Discovery 4 HSE Lux - Second time around

Lots on maintenance, including LR service schedules in the WiKi here:-

It would help if you completed your profile - i.e. where are you from, someone might be in a position to offer local help & assistance, or point you towards an excellent deal.

Thanks for the replies, very helpful especially the wiki link. Don't know how I missed this
Looking at this it seems the running costs will be slightly cheaper than my current car, although not massively. Warranty (circa £750), servicing and road tax are the same, although with my current car there is a big service costing around £1k that comes up every 3 years or so. Fuel will be slightly cheaper, as will insurance, but as I said it'll not be a massive saving overall. The joys of motoring eh

The active rear diff or E diff is totally automatic, the computer takes care of its activation. If you don't specify the active diff your car will only have the automatic centre diff. A car without the active rear diff will get to the same places as one with it but the active diff car will probably do it with less fuss ie less wheels spinning etc, if you are not planning on doing a lot of off road driving it's probably one of the boxes you can leave un-ticked. One thing to bear in mind is if you specify the active rear diff you will not be able to order the factory rear seat entertainment package.
Mine is going in for it's 1st service on Thursday and I have been quoted £250 from an official Land Rover Service Centre Cheers Ian

Thanks for the help. As this would be my everyday car I won't be doing any extreme off-roading for fear of damage, so the active diff certainly sounds like something I can live without
Out of interest why can't you fit the rear seat entertainment if you have the active rear diff?
