A possible return
After three Discos (1 three and two fours) I have returned to the site after three years. Missed the banter to be honest...
Although I am still in the fold with a elderly 90 Td5 and we have a mercedes estate. Looking at maybe getting an early discovery three (04-06) as the other daily to do limited local miles alongside the new Mercedes, get rid of little VW. Budget 10k SE/HSE Auto....
Am I mad.... I know it won't all be plain sailing, but I miss the discovery brand a lot. The defender is great but is no fun towing a heavy trailer .....

Sorry I am not even going to try to talk you out of it, you know you want to do it, what else comes close to offering the all round comfort and capabilities of a nice D3 at what is now a very sensible price.

Do it, the earlier the better, and get a V8. It's a future classic

A 2016 E Class estate has some value - use it to put towards a small deposit on a late D4 and we won't speak of it again!

You know the drill.....look for one that's had everything done to it already, hopefully find a nice one on this forum. I love my 55plate SE I've owned since early 2009, it's now been demoted to my works vehicle having decided to buy a late D4. I can't honestly imagine being parted from her!Stu

Buy it then get straight on the phone to the credit card company and up your credit limit. Or extend the mortgage.

Sensible choice but you'll look at every D3/4 you see on the road and it will tug at your heart strings just a little.
Unless it's broken down that is.

Have to say, after many Jap and korean cars and SUVs (and a few pick ups too) i think youll end up regretting a shogun over a d3/4
Ok, so landrovers have their problems, but a good one or a bad one fixed is WAY WAY better than anything the eastern market can make.
We have a 2016 model Tuscon (the wifes car) which is ok and surprisingly well equipped, but the comfort and ability and size isnt a patch on my D3
And a 2014 one is still floundering in the dark ages!
I had a 2010 santa fe, and that was mundane, poorly equipped, and felt like a 1980 car
Im afraid anything pre 2015/16 in the jap market simply feels like a vintage car.
Id rather have my disco, be incredibly comfortable on long journeys, have decent space.
But hey, if you like the shogun, then what we all think makes zero difference anyway

I do agree with many of the above points. I would prefer prefer a D3/4. After owning both in the past I know how prolific they are
My justifications are as follows:
Couldn't afford a D4, would have required finance. Can't be bothered with 3-400 pm for a second car, just can't justify that kind of expense, it isn't prudent without getting rid of Defender, i'd rather sell a kidney.
This Shogun, I have known the car since new. Belonged to a friend. 53k on clock full main dealer history. Top Spec. Immaculate. Got it for a similar price to what I'd have been paying for a 07/08 HSE with 90k miles on the clock....
Its not the best looking, and a Discovery drives way way better, the shogun reminds me of a Disco 2 in some ways in its driving antics, it does feel old. By god its bad on fuel too Good job its only used for low miles as second car.
It however, feels totally bombproof, and I feel confident that other than routine maintenance, I should see another 50-75k trouble free miles (the next 10 years).... I couldn't say that about a disco...
I will get another Discovery or new Land Rover product at some point. The numbers just didn't stack up for the moment.

I like the Shogun short wheel base 3 door. I would totally buy one, it's like a cheap copy mix of a Classic RR, Defender and a D1 all together.

Well the shogun has had a busy few weeks doing 3,500 miles across europe.
Not particularly refined and poor on fuel.....
Done 7k since April since getting it. Runs like a swiss watch. Totally uninspiring though. We have also kept the little VW Up! Well that has been donated to offspring for free......
Good Job the old Td5 90 has decided to spit out its rear diff 2023 Ineos Grenadier 3.0 Diesel Commercial

I still have my 93 2.8 pajero. It is not a bad car and looked at the 3.2 did for towing. But unless I brought a late one the max towing was 3.3t. I need 3.5t.
The D3 was in budget and it is a better drive. It is going to cost me more in the long run though, already started to empty my pockets.
