Possible AirCon pulley whine

Hi all,

Been lurking for a while and have finally ended up with an issue I’m trying to resolve!

I have a whining noise that is related to the engine revs. It’s definitely a pulley as I have removed the aux belt, ran the engine and the noise is gone. Initially thought to be the tensioner but after more digging and using a mechanics stethoscope I’m pretty certain it’s coming from the AirCon compressor. The noise also changes tone when engaging and disengaging the AirCon. All the pulleys are smooth when rotating however the AirCon one isn’t as smooth as the others, but I am unsure if this is due to the way the AirCon works using the clutch.

AirCon works as expected, currently has approx 70psi of system pressure. I think the bearing is cooked but wondered if anyone has had a similar issue and it turned out not to be the AirCon compressor. I’m probably clutching at straws and need to just accept it needs replacing but it’s always worth a shot!

2015 SDV6 with 59000 miles. Pleas let me know if you need any other details!

Appreciate any responses.

Thanks

Seems very low mileage for the compressor to fail but there's no clutch in that system so if it's coarse when turning it that's very possibly the source of the noise.

It's no small job to replace the compressor, so double check all the pulleys and idlers including the alternator, water and PS pumps before you fire the parts cannon.

You could spend a small amount and remove the aux belt replacing it with a shorter one that excludes the A/C compressor. This would confirm if the compressor is the culprit before you take on compressor replacement. The shorter belt size is 1755mm 8 rib. Thumbs Up
