position of gear lever

Hi all ,I have a 2011 discovery auto, is it a good idea when stopping at traffic lights or the like to put it in neutral until ready to drive away or leave it in drive with footbrake on is either option a good idea or makes no difference, at the moment I put it in n until ready to go, many thanks, alan.

Form me it depends, if the lights have just changed to red, I stick it in park and take my foot off the brake to save dazzling the person behind.

P with nothing on footbrake was my way of doing it, park brake on if not flat. D3 disks get warped extremely easily so soon got out of the habit of sitting stopped in D with foot on brake pedal. Thumbs Up

Try say is actually harms putting it in N or P frequently.

I apply the park brake if it works well

I just press the brake pedal. Same as with all the other automatics. EPB when parked. Again same as with previous/other vehicles. Thumbs Up

I'm sure I read in the handbook recently that you shouldn't stay in gear with foot on the brake for long periods of time.

I think the 6 speed manual says to not stay in drive for long periods without moving.

I usually stick mine in neutral when waiting.

I think the 8 speeds are fine to leave in drive while stationary.

What qualifies as a long period? Can’t be bothered to fetch the manual, it’s cold out there 8)

The neutral shift lock is a pain. You can’t just pull it into drive

I always put my car in neutral with footbrake until ready to drive away , LESS gearbox clutches wear and tear, of course!

A quick light change just leave it in D with the handbrake on, then just accelerate away. As per DSL stay off the footbrake, save the discs.

Better save the gearbox than the discs.....................

No wear if the disks are stopped....

The disc cools differently where the pads hold it and then they warp

My wife’s Saab handbook says not to take it out of drive at traffic lights.

I rarely bother unless I know it’s a long wait.
