Playing music from iPhone through aux socket

Hi, I have an iPhone 7 and have connected the phone to the aux socket in my D3 using a cable with a 3.5mm jack at one end and a lightning connector at the other end. I cannot get the music to play. When I connect an android phone using 3.5mm to 3.5mm jacks, it plays beautifully. Can anybody suggest what I do to fix this ? Thanks ! Will

I had similar problems and then gave up with the direct connection and plugged in a BT module instead and now play via BT from my iPhone 7.
The unit I got was called a Mpow Bluetooth transmitter.

In my African Disco it is now wired in permanently to the AUX and power circuit at the rear of the centre console. When you start the Disco, the iPhone automatically connects for music.

I have run an iPhone se then an iPhone 10 through my aux socket with no problem apart from turning the iphone volume up to max. On a low-mid settings g you could easily think it wasn't working IME.
Just 'cause you got the power... that don't mean you got the right.

The Lightning connector on an iPhone in addition to carrying power only has a digital interface.

Thus a digital to analogue converter (DAC) is required to convert a digital output an analogue signal, such as contained in an Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Converter.

in addition Apple have incorporated authentication into the Lightning interface so that they and only manufacturers approved by them can use the digital interface.

Are you sure zig? I bought a cheap splitter from eBay that plugs into the lightning socket and allows me to connect both power and 3.5 Jack simultaneously. It's a tiny dac if it is cont a lined within a lightning plug.

I bought a splitter as well. It works fine with headphones, but sadly not with the aux socket šŸ™. My Samsung phone works fine if I plug it into the aux socket using a 3.5 mm jack to 3.5mm jack cable, but not if I plug it in using the usb c to 3.5mm jack cable. All very strange !

Thatā€™s interesting because I bought an aux 3.5mm plug in loom for my radio , handy as I didnā€™t have to alter any wiring , steering wheel controls also work ,

Will have to see if my iPhone SE will work , have got the base model so donā€™t know if it makes any difference of not having an amp

See thereā€™s an iPhone charge or data lead, wonder if that makes any difference

Must also get round to fitting Bluetooth, will check that adaptor out, many thks for the link Thumbs Up

Yes I am 100% sure that a DAC is required to get analogue rather than digital out of the lightning connector on an iPhone see https://www.ifixit.com/News/8448/apple-audio-adapter-teardown

LRBT1 from British American Concepts is the way to go, provides bluetooth streaming USB connection and can support Bluetooth calling if you need it -

Thumbs Up

My 2009 D3 HSE has the OEM iPod connectivity kit fitted in the glovebox but it is really unreliable and often had to be reset with a small pin in the reset hole. I used to have a bluetooth dongle on the end of that cable and then connected bluetooth for audio streaming to it and it was a constant annoyance. The Aux connector in the back of the armrest was fine but quite a faf as my wife and son have iPhones with 3.5mm plugs and mine was lightning so the Apple connector was always being pulled out and lost under seats etc, I also had a Belkin one that had 3.5 and lightning connector which was great but again kept getting lost. As others have said with the 3.5 socket you have to have volume full on the device
and use the car volume to control audio level or quality drops. Don't think there is much of a difference on the LRBT unit in audio but it does seem to be marginally better

Ā£130 +/- at the current exchange rate.
Not sure what the postage and package would be additional to that?

I have a guy in Chicago who received it prior to me visiting so just paid him and he had it waiting for me to go over, then Corona stopped that happening so he sent it via UPS a month ago, so canā€™t confirm what they charge normally to the UK
