As above...I have noticed a more pronounced tinkling sound under hard acceleration.....I can only describe it as what I used to know as "pinking" in petrol engines.....just wondered if anybody has experienced the same...maybe its always done it and I'm just now noticing "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Strange you mention that Euan, because I've wondered exactly the same as you about mine. Perhaps one of the things is that I always used to have the radio on in the D3 (to hide rattles etc), but very often I don't bother with the D4, so hear the car more.
Incidentally, I was recently driving a new Range Rover as a tracking car at a towing event. One of the manoeuvres was for a D4 towing a large twin axle caravan to pull out and overtake us. As it did so and the gearbox kicked down a cog or two, the engine didn't half sound rattly. That was on a fairly new press vehicle.
I hope it's our imagination!

Used to get that on SWMBO's old D3 and on mine after cam belt change. Just got used to the noise as part of the adventure.

I just drove 1700 miles through Arizona and Nevada. About half way through the trip my '07 started doing the same thing. I took it to the Las Vegas Rover dealer and he said that it was my fan. After putting in a new $780.00 fan, I drove of the lot with the the problem not resolved. My local British Motor Shop thinks that it is a bad pulley. I am taking it in next week to have them find the problem. I'm not stealthy.

Wow, spooky - what fuel do you both use (any supermarkets or very small time locals)? I only ever used BP or Shell, can't say I ever had the problem. The 6 speeds seem to change down at lower engine load than the 8 speed, so would say that less likey in those. Never had any strange detonation noises in either! I'm far too obsessive to leave an unknown noise alone!
Hope you are both enjoying? The new 110 XS SW is on its way!

Fuel source made no difference. Use whoever is convenient and cheap(ish), normally Tesco & Esso with a sprinkling of Asda & Shell.

Mark.
Hi Mark...yes I think you may be onto something...stuck a double dose of Millers in today and it was much less pronounced...In auto mode the box holds onto a higher gear than I feel it should sometimes....and that is when I get the "pinking"...I read on the "hesitation" thread that after the software re-calibration,the 'box is keener to change down....I'm booking mine in so it will be interesting to report back
Knew you wouldn't be able to resist having another LR product for long .... "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Hi Mark,
Yes, spooky indeed! By coincidence, my dad was wondering the same about his FL2 recently. It's probably my imagination. I did a round trip to Chichester last week, and although the sat nav refuses to recognise the A34, that's the route used. Not the best for economy, especially with awful traffic here and there, but did a true 32.5 to the gallon of Tesco's finest! You were lucky; you have that well priced Shell station near you!
The car will be on the cover (and inside!) of Practical Caravan within the next few months!
By the way, with my light right foot, the 6-speed is often very lazy at changing down. Note to self - press the pedal harder!
