Just make sure your device has GPS. IIRC, iPads without a SIM card and iPods don't have it.

I think you can still use gps without a contract. The only issue is that pads without a cellular modem don't have gps as the gps and modem are integrated into one chip ands it's an assisted gps, using cell tower information to get quick fixes.

It's easy enough to check, turn off wifi and see if you get a location that works in something like Google maps.

Indeed, that is correct. I simply meant that the Wifi only iPad doesn't have a GPS chip, not that it wouldn't work without a data signal, although you would have to download your maps over Wifi beforehand obviously.
