When it was below 0C, water in the sensor froze and it worked.
When it was liquid it didn't work
Interesting observation which I had not thought of, I will need to keep my eye to the performance and prevailing temperature to see if there's a link there.
If there is water in the sensor, are they typically goosed by that point or can they be salvaged?1998 Defender 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF

Well I think I finally found the problem.
Although no specific fault codes have been popping up to ID which sensor was at fault (if at all) I did a Live Values test using the IID tool and once I’d figured out how that process worked it shows my right inner sensor not working correctly, as you can see from this screen shot.
I’ll replace that one and see how it goes.

you maybe able to dry the sensor out in an airing cupboard.
But you may as well order a replacement now you have identified the troublesome one.

I’ve purchased a genuine one for less than £20 so it’s not a bank breaker1998 Defender 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF

Excellent.
That might indeed be the culprit. Pit that the whole bumper needs to come off for that repair. Not over complicat, just extea work. While the bumper is off, and the sensor is replaced, try the pdc to see if any other sensor is also failing. In your case i would already chane the left inner too since this might also fail and you found a cheap original sensor.

A small update.
Fitted the replacement sensor on the weekend, hardest part of this job is removing the mudflaps, as the fixings were completely corroded despite me having fitted them with loads of copper grease and ACF50. Also, and really annoyingly, the new mudflaps at the time came with fixings that had a star bit head on them, which is stupid. They were never going to work again!.
I had to dremel slots into the heads to get them off and by the end, I wished I had just removed the rear wheels as they really hinder the work.
I have tested the sensors when static on the IID and all fine again, however in real life when putting it into reverse it is bleeping randomly when there's no obstructions.
So, plugged in IID and looked to see a real live test value as I reverse and the same sensor is being triggered. I am now wondering if this might be a loom issue and there's a chafed wire or something. I might have to take it all off again!1998 Defender 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF

I have the same sort of issue with my front sensors. One sensor randomly goes of. I replaced a completely non working sensor with a cheap Chinese special one. The fault went from a flashing button (ie not working at all) to the beeping randomly I get now.
When I check the live values, the cheap sensor distance jumps from 2.5 to nothing. I suspect these cheap sensors are useless. The wiring loom was brand new as well.

Some cheap sensors work
I notice some on eBay now come with lifetime warranty.
Maybe worth a punt

I guess a good way to find out is to swap the one out that's giving the odd readings with a known working one already there and see if it persists. That tells you the problem is not the sensor.1998 Defender 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF

Yes that's a good idea to do while the bumper is off.
Given the hassle and cost of ebay sensors, you may as well have a spare one to fit while the bumper is off.
