Pathetic Alarm

Hi There
I'm a newcomer to the world of Land Rovers having bought my very first one last September mainly to tow a 1900Kg caravan (being delivered on 4th Mar) and accomodate a family of 6. I now have a TDV6 with auto gearbox; it is awesome and we love it to bits . So far (after 5000 miles), nothing has gone wrong with it and I hope it stays that way.

Having looked through some of the other posts on this site, I now know that there is an issue with the alarm in that it is far too quiet but I'll continue with my little tale.

Some f*!@#wit with nothing better to do smashed my rear (tailgate) window last Thursday evening whilst the car was parked outside my house. We didn't hear the alarm go off so I tested it by sitting in the car and locking myself in with the key. After squirming around in there for a least 3 minutes whilst waving my arms around in front of the sensors, the alarm finally sounded but it was pathetic and no one in our house heard it, even though they were stood at the window watching some 30 feet way!

On Saturday, I went to the dealers and got them to lock me and one of their salesmen in one of their cars with the same result. It took me and him 3 or 4 minutes of frantic arm flapping and trying to rock the car to get the alarm to go off and once again, it was pathetic - wouldn't alarm a baby let alone a hardened 14 year old yobbo!

Why does it take all this effort to make the alarm go off in the first place? I realise that you wouldn't want it going off at every slightest movement but if waving hands in front of the sensors for several minutes doesn't do it, will breaking a window?

I have written to Land Rover about this as I don't think this is good enough protection for a £40,000+ car. I know it wouldn't have stopped the little git from breaking in to the car but if the alarm had gone off (I'll never know if it did or not), and you could actually hear it when it did, he might have been caught and I wouldn't be £60 out of pocket.

Question ( because I don't know ) ..

Do the sensors detect change in air pressure, rather than movement ?
..............Somewhere in-between my old D3 and what's to come next .........

I have never heard my alarm, but where is the sounder? Do you think it is possible to change it for an after market proper loud siren. Question

On a related note (and yes I agree the alarm is way to soft - but then my audi's was too) twice now when I've unlocked the car, the indicator lights will flash very rapidly.

Is this an attempted entry warning ? Not heard the alarm go off - but then its very quiet.

Maybe the sign of a false trigger ?

I set mine off yesteday by accident and I was suprised at how such a big car has a pathetic alarm, it's the equivalent of having Frank Bruno with Joe Pasquale's voice.

Sorry Confused edited.

Was thinking of those RRS people on the other side, they must have a flash trigger on their rides.

the pathetic level could be some euro-edict on the maximum output so as not cause hearing loss or fright to the scroat trying to steal your Disco3 Evil or Very Mad
Seem to remember something on this a good while ago where someone got the dealer to tweak the output level? - or maybe I dreamt it Rolling Eyes

I don't think its an alarm sounder in the traditional sense, seems to be linked to the CJB, the interior protection does disable if you use the tailgate opening trick for the keyfob so the chances are it is linked to the IHU also. Both sensors - not sure if they're ultrasonic or volumetric (microwave), seem to point rearwards as well. As they don't seem to be affected by an open window i'd guess at volumetric

Interior detection is by 'Air movement within the cabin' if you care to check your manual. So this suggests that it may be worth blowing the cob-webs out of the sensor pod on the roof lining. Either that or eat more baked-beans. Laughing
