PAS fluid?

Hi, can anyone recommend a type/brand of power steering fluid to use in a D4 MY2012 that's readily available in the UK, hand book says Texaco cold climate however I can't find that.

CHF 11S or CHF 202. 202 is fully compatible downwards with 11S. They’re also fully mixable with each other.

CHF7.1

Old thread resurrection I know…

My MY16 D4 has a power steering leak and I’ve just topped up with CHF7.1 (which is what the local motor factor computer system told us was the right stuff for the vehicle) as it stands this is primarily to protect the pump from running dry for a 5 or 6 mile drive to the garage who are going to look at what needs doing so at this point I’m not worried about what’s in it now, it’ll likely be on the floor tomorrow!

The garage use the same motor factor so the PAS is going to end up filled up with the same stuff unless I’m careful and if I hadn’t been looking at the forum to frighten me about what’s wrong with my poor car I probably wouldn’t have know about it to worry about it.

Is CHF7.1 the wrong stuff and I should make sure it’s refilled with CHF11. My garage is very good but he’s not a LR specialist. I can’t get the vehicle down to Mike in Dundee and almost very other local garage is booked up for the next 4 or more weeks, Stratstone in Elgin is booking mid November to even look at it. My guy is looking at the car this weekend as a big favour as he services all our cars when it doesn’t need Mike to fettle my Discovery, he’s actually booked up the next 6 weeks otherwise.

Many thanks

Richard

Officially CHF 7.1 is NOT mixable with 11S or 202. The fluids are of different type (mineral oil based vs “modern” synthetic oil) and have different operating temperature ranges.

Supposedly it is compatible from the fluid’s point of view that if you’ve flushed the whole system you can use 7.1 only. Since the fluid is needed to make the power steering happy (so hydraulics, really) this probably holds true also in the D3/D4.

Many thanks for replying. This stuff states fully synthetic on the bottle and CHF7.1 is hidden in the small print on the bottle. It states cold climate and I nearly stopped reading at that point.

The Discovery and the bottle of hydraulic fluid are over at my dad’s house so I cannot look at what brand etc.

Sounds like I should source some CHF11s or 202 for the garage to use? Or does “fully synthetic” change the this?

Unfortunately, cannot answer that.

I would recommend not to mix. As for myself, I’ve got 11S in the steering fluid system. The brand is Fuchs Titan which equals the good old Pentosin that they acquired some years ago. You can use any brand claiming 11S or 202 compatibility.

I concur… mixing fluids is never the right path. Its proper time for a drain and fill.

(and I have to admit I always thought it odd that LR would spec a chevron or texaco product as opposed to addressing a specification…. what kind of engineer does that?!?)

But I digress.

Firstly, I would (and have) consider a fully synthetic power steering fluid = A low viscosity, hydraulic fluid.

That is precisely what I have done. Royal Purple is in there now. I have used Ravenol in the past.

Incidentally, I perform a scheduled, complete fluid change on the power steering fluid… (and reservoir, as it contains the screen filter), as I do with brake fluid… and all other fluids and filters, for that matter.

Thanks matches my thoughts (despite knowing nothing about it) that I’ll be worried by every odd whirring noise unless I get the right stuff. Guy at garage is sorting it out and I trust him.

Regards

Richard
