Off road height; I understand that to be the highest setting then?

OK.
I might raise it anyway, so I can get my big head under and make sure the hydraulic jack is positioned correctly!

dairwin, firstly sorry to hear about your compressor problem. And there is yet another height above Offroad mode called 'Extended mode' used when the chassis grounds on terrain. Search for extended mode.
I have come close to jacking at the wrong point on at least one occasion too so you don't have to feel alone with that. READ poor design...
BTW, plenty of good and knowledgeable information here on disco.co.uk forum (not a link) so let that be your best guide to getting the most out of your vehicle.LeighW

Thanks for that. I will have a good search about and appreciate the advice.
Yes welcome to the forum, sorry you had such a rough start, but as said above, you're not the first or last.
The compressor cover can be removed easily by removal of a hex head bolt underneath into the baseplate of the compressor and two torx screws into the side of the chassis rail. Then it unclips from the upper cover.
Good luck with it chap LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

I really feel for you...there but for the grace go I! The main reason for putting it in off-road height before jacking is that the suspension does the first few inches of lift for you and it's easier to get the jack securely located. Jacking seems to take forever from Access mode! Went for a job as a human cannonball. Not the right calibre.
Forget the screw jack, get a bottle or trolley , Jack on the lower arm and let it cock it's leg Altox GSM FBH controller thread

Update from last evening:
Removed the cover to the pump this morning, and had a look. The hex screw sheared off when I applied moderate socket pressure (it screws into an ally casting).
Otherwise the cover unclipped, torx heads came away fine. Inside cover was full of mud and dust, but once cleared out the black motor casing seemed in good and clean shape. Nothing obvious. Ally mount for the motor had heavy white corrosion dust.
I started the engine and stuck my head under; pump was making the noise it was yesterday. I wiggled it about on its rubber mounts and the noise didn't seem to change at all. I was hoping to find a quiet spot. Replaced the cover and drove it about. Motor stopped a few times and was then quiet for the remaining 20mins drive.
Car is going to be checked as part of the recall/inspection for the tow bar issue, so I will ask LR to have a look at this as well.
Question; I assume this pump fills a pressure tank/accumulator somewhere? How often would the pump be operating on a road drive?
Thanks, David.

I'd get back under there, armed with a spray bottle of soapy water to find the leak.
