Parking Shoes wont close - updated |
|
So I'm changing the rear disks on my D3, but I think the parking brake shoes have moved. My "assistant" actuated the parking brake when the disks were off.
So how can I get the brake shoes to now close so I can get the discs on?
I've fully closed the manual adjuster but there's still a gap at the top of the shoes.

EPB should be disabled before you work on it to avoid this scenario but I suspect you now don't need me to tell you that.
You may have to pull the emergency release in order to fit your discs then you may need to follow this thread as the epb module will be over wound:

Always use bodsy's brake bible:

Hi Stu.
No, I don't need to be told that now thanks
So i pulled the emergency release and got the brakes back together again - I'll look at the bible now.
Does the EPB recalibration routine reset it?
Cheers,
Jim

Got all the discs and pads replaced, and adjusted the parking brake adjuster as per the guide, but the parking brake warning is on the dash, and it says its inactive.
So I'm guessing its now unlatched.
Can I re latch it without a diagnostic tool, or taking the EPB module apart?
Cheers.

You can attempt a re-latch with a tool such as IID tool or similar but if it fails to re-latch then Discomikey's thread on unjamming the module will be handy. Stu

Hi again.
I've successfully managed to un-jam and re-latch my Disco3 EPB following the great guide here so thanks very much for that.
A useful tip to add to the Wiki maybe - If you connect a 12v DC source to the motor, it can be used to wind the slide back and forth once unjammed. The top of the motor (blue wire) should be connected to battery -ve and the bottom (red wire) to +ve for the motor to wind in the direction to re-latch it. I would strongly suggest unplugging the module, and disconnecting at least one motor wire before attempting this to avoid damaging any electronics.
I found on my first attempt that the white box to be latched onto was slightly hanging out of the box and the latch failed - I simply reversed the motor slightly, pressed the box into place and tried again with success.
One question about refitting. When trying to prise of the lid of the EPB module, I seem to have removed the box from the bulkhead - how do the fixing on the box connect to the chassis? They seem to be rubber mounts of some kind - are they replaceable?
Cheers,
Jim
