Parking Brake Cable
Hi, does anyone have a good trick to remove the parking brake cable from the dust shield? I've persuaded the plastic cap to undo but I cannot get the metal ferrule at the end of the cable sheath out of the tube on the dust shield.
I've tried heat, rotating the ferrule (it won't), pulling (managed to get the cable sheath out of the ferrule) but it won't shift, and I've tried levering on the circlip recess.
It hasn't budged even a fraction so am I missing something or do I just have to beat the living daylights out of it?
It's an eighteen year old vehicle so you'll understand my reluctance to terminally damage the end of the cable as I have no wish to start pulling out the handbrake system.
My goal is to get the hub off so that I can replace the dust shield.
Any advice gratefully received!
Cheers, Colin

Rust has jammed it into the backplate, heat, lubrication and patience or careful cutting of the shield may be required, but you're replacing them anyway!
Speaking of which, if you are replacing the backplates you will have to split the hub completely to get the backplates off, which will require a new bearing to be fitted. (along with a 30 ton press) There are split ones available in the U.S. but expensive at around $360.00 compared £60.00 for the same quality (solid) ones on this side.
I have heard of others suggesting to cut the new backplates and weld them back on. To be honest though if it's 18yrs old and on the original bearings, it's probably time to consider rebuilding the hub knuckles now with new bearings and knuckle bushes etc, etc. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Yes I have already got the new bearing, backplate and suspension bolts to complete the job. I've also found a garage who will press the bearings out and in for me. Hadn't really considered replacing the bushes but I'll have a good look at them when the hub is off.
Sounds like I just have to heat and beat until I lose my nerve and start cutting the backplate to bits - as you say I'm replacing it anyway.
Does anybody have an idea how far the ferrule is buried into the backplate?
Thanks

From what I can see it looks fine, copper grease the mounting Bush before reassembly. The back plate looks salvageable too, again from what I can see!
I've seen worse, a lot lot worse where it looked like a sieve. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thanks Kev, that's what I needed to see.
The lower part of the backplate is practically non existent on my vehicle, the one in the picture is Kev's.
Unfortunately Prof was right about the bushes as the top knuckle adjuster bolt is seized into the bush so it needs cutting out.
This means that my window of opportunity for sorting this out has gone so I've rebuilt it all and I'll try again in the autumn (armed with both bushes - the bottom one seems fine and the bolt flew out but it would be a mistake not to change it whilst it's in bits).
